LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Hank Landau upon the occasion of his
designation for special recognition by Albany County at its Veterans
Recognition Program on June 11, 2015
WHEREAS, Members of the Armed Services from the State of New York, who
have served so valiantly and honorably in wars in which this country's
freedom was at stake, as well as in the preservation of peace in peace-
time, deserve a special salute; and
WHEREAS, It is the intent of this Legislative Body to commend these
who have served in times of active conflict, as well as those who have
served in times of peace; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor Hank
Landau upon the occasion of his designation for special recognition by
Albany County at its Veterans Recognition Program on Thursday, June 11,
2015, at the Albany County Office Building, Albany, New York; and
WHEREAS, Hank Landau is being recognized with this esteemed honor for
his courageous and dedicated service to his country; and
WHEREAS, At the young age of 16, Hank Landau proudly served his coun-
try with distinction as a member of the United States Navy during World
War II; and
WHEREAS, A Seaman 1st Class on the USS Sylvania, Hank Landau was
awarded the Asiatic Pacific Medal; and
WHEREAS, While aboard the USS Sylvania on July 1, 1946, Seaman Hank
Landau and his crew were positioned near Bikini Atoll during Operation
Crossroads; they witnessed the fourth ever atomic bomb detonation at
this location, and once again on July 25, 1946; and
WHEREAS, Following his discharge from the Navy, Hank Landau earned his
high school diploma; after graduation, he joined the Sheet Metal Workers
Local No. 83; and
WHEREAS, Hank Landau held the position of Union President for 22
years; he then went on to lead the local AFL/CIO contingent of the
building trades for six years before retiring; and
WHEREAS, Residents of this great State must never forget the courage
with which these men and women served their country, and must recognize
that no greater debt is owed than that owed to those who gave their
lives for their beloved Nation and to those who continue to be missing
in action; and
WHEREAS, Having exhibited his patriotism both at home and abroad, Hank
Landau demonstrated his love for his country and merits forevermore, the
highest respect of his State and Nation; and
WHEREAS, Our Nation's veterans deserve to be recognized, commended and
thanked by the people of the State of New York for their service and for
their dedication to their communities, their State and their Nation;
now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Hank Landau upon the occasion of his designation for special
recognition by Albany County at its Veterans Recognition Program on June
11, 2015; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Hank Landau.
