LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Dr. Barbara Iglewski upon the occasion
of her induction into the National Women's Hall of Fame on October 3,
2015

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to take note of and
publicly acknowledge individuals who have distinguished themselves
through their exemplary careers, accomplishments, and purposeful lives
of service and commitment to their community and their profession; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor Dr.
Barbara Iglewski upon the occasion of her induction into the National
Women's Hall of Fame on Saturday, October 3, 2015; and
WHEREAS, The Women's Hall of Fame was founded in 1969 in Seneca Falls,
the birthplace of the American women's rights movement; in 1979, the
Hall moved to its current quarters, a historic bank building in the
heart of the Seneca Falls Historic District; and
WHEREAS, The Women's Hall of Fame seeks to enhance the public's under-
standing of American history and culture by showcasing and preserving
the stories of pioneering women whose achievements have enduring value
and have significance both in our country and the world; and
WHEREAS, This vital non-profit organization honors a group of women
nominated by the public and chosen by a national panel of experts; these
distinguished women have demonstrated outstanding achievement in arts,
athletics, business, education, government, humanities, science, or
philanthropy, and their stories serve as tools for inspiration, inno-
vation and imagination; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Barbara Iglewski will take her place among 256 of the
country's most respected history-making, destiny-changing women includ-
ing Maya Angelou, Amelia Earhart, Helen Keller, Betty Ford and Eleanor
Roosevelt, when she is inducted into the renowned National Women's Hall
of Fame; and
WHEREAS, A resident of Gorham, New York, Dr. Barbara Iglewski, profes-
sor emeritus in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology at the
University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry, is a true
pioneer in microbiology, research, and mentorship; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Barbara Iglewski's laboratory was the first to discover
that bacteria uses a communication system, a type of chemical language,
to coordinate attacks on human cells and initiate disease; her work
launched an entire field of study on how the system works in many types
of bacteria; subsequently, several drugs designed to interrupt this
communication process and prevent infection are being developed; and
WHEREAS, Born in 1938, Dr. Barbara Iglewski holds several patents and
is a prolific writer and editor; she has also spent decades as an advo-
cate for and mentor of women; she served as President of the American
Society for Microbiology from 1987 to 1988 and chaired its publications
board from 1990 to 1999, at a time when very few women served on edito-
rial boards; and
WHEREAS, In 1986, Dr. Barbara Iglewski was recruited to the University
of Rochester to serve as chair of the Department of Microbiology and
Immunology; she was the first female department chair at the School of
Medicine and Dentistry, the esteemed position she held until 2009; and
WHEREAS, The author of more than 150 research papers and book chap-
ters, Dr. Barbara Iglewski is recognized by the Institute of Science
Information as a highly cited scientist, a group that makes up less than
0.5 percent of all publishing researchers; and
WHEREAS, The recipient of numerous awards and accolades, Dr. Barbara
Iglewski was recognized with the School of Medicine and Dentistry's

Lifetime Mentoring Award in 2009, the Susan B. Anthony Lifetime Achieve-
ment Award in 2001, and the Arthur Kornberg Research Award in 1999; and
WHEREAS, It is the practice of this Legislative Body that those who
enhance the quality of life in their community and have shown a long and
sustained commitment to the maintenance of high standards in their
profession, certainly have earned the recognition and applause of all
the citizens of this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Dr. Barbara Iglewski upon the occasion of her induction into the
National Women's Hall of Fame on October 3, 2015; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Dr. Barbara Iglewski.
