LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commending Henry Street Settlement's Abrons Art
Center upon the occasion of its 100th Anniversary

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize organiza-
tions of commitment and high achievement whose purpose and endeavor are
dedicated to the pursuit of excellence in its communities, and to the
development and support of artists and the arts; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern and fully in accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to recognize
and commend Henry Street Settlement's Abrons Art Center on the occasion
of its 100th Anniversary; and
WHEREAS, From its inception in 1915 under the care of Henry Street
Settlement, the Abrons Art Center has provided a home for adventurous
music, dance performances, and art exhibits on the Lower East Side; and
WHEREAS, Founded in 1893, Henry Street Settlement has provided impor-
tant social services for residents of all ages on the Lower East Side
including after school programs at local schools, senior services, and
healthcare programs; and
WHEREAS, Over the past century, the Abrons Art Center has presented a
wide variety of performances in many disciplines, featuring the work of
artists such as Martha Graham, Aaron Copeland, John Cage, Philip Glass,
and Meredith Monk; and
WHEREAS, The Abrons Art Center is celebrating its 100th Anniversary
with the performance of numerous New York City premieres and the award-
ing of art scholarships to youth in need, artist residencies, and free
tickets to low-income patrons; and
WHEREAS, The Abrons Art Center Main Gallery and the Culpeper Gallery
promote visual artists by regularly mounting exhibits and providing
artists with shared studio space; and
WHEREAS, The Abrons Arts Center continues to support innovative,
multi-disciplinary work and helps artists learn and grow through educa-
tional programs and residencies; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend the Henry Street Settlement's Abrons Art Center upon the occa-
sion of its 100th Anniversary; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Henry Street Settlement's Abrons Art Center.
