LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Dr. Alice Green upon the occasion of her
designation for special recognition by the United Tenants of Albany on
June 25, 2015
WHEREAS, It is incumbent upon the people of the State of New York to
recognize and acknowledge those within our midst who have made signif-
icant contributions to the quality of life therein; and
WHEREAS, From time to time this Legislative Body takes note of certain
extraordinary individuals it wishes to recognize for their valued
contributions to the success and progress of society and publicly
acknowledge their endeavors which have enhanced the basic humanity among
us all; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to honor Dr. Alice
Green upon the occasion of her designation for special recognition by
the United Tenants of Albany, to be celebrated at its Annual Meeting on
Thursday, June 25, 2015, at St. Vincent De Paul Parish Hall, Albany, New
York; and
WHEREAS, This esteemed woman has been called upon to contribute her
time and talents to countless civic and charitable endeavors and has
always given of herself unstintingly; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Alice Green is the Executive Director of the Center for
Law and Justice, an organization she founded in 1985, dedicated to serv-
ing the low-income and disadvantaged communities of New York through
education and advocacy; and
WHEREAS, With an undergraduate degree in African-American studies,
master's degrees in criminal justice, education, and social work, as
well as a doctorate in criminal justice, Dr. Alice Green is an accom-
plished author and founder of the Paden Institute and Retreat for Writ-
ers of Color; and
WHEREAS, In addition to these remarkable accomplishments, Dr. Alice
Green has taught at several local colleges, served as Executive Director
of Trinity in Albany, and has served on a number of boards for state
agencies and non-profit organizations; and
WHEREAS, A steadfast advocate for racial injustice, Dr. Alice Green
has worked assiduously over several decades in the day to day practice
of community organizing to bring people together on both the profes-
sional and neighborhood level to wrestle with local instances of injus-
tice; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Alice Green was instrumental in the development of commu-
nity policing and restorative justice policies and practices in Albany;
and
WHEREAS, Throughout the entire period of her community service, a
period of constructive involvement, Dr. Alice Green has stood constant
in dignity, good grace and humor; and
WHEREAS, Rare indeed is the impressive dedication shown by an individ-
ual for the benefit of others which Dr. Alice Green has displayed
throughout her life; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when individ-
uals of such noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our atten-
tion, they should be celebrated and recognized by all the citizens of
this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Dr. Alice Green upon the occasion of her designation for special
recognition by the United Tenants of Albany on June 25, 2015; and be it
further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Dr. Alice Green.
