LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commending Melissa Thomas and Naseem Dabiran upon
the occasion of their selection as State Finalists for the 2015 New York
State Science Congress

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to act, in accord with
its long-standing traditions, to honor the achievements of its young
citizens and leaders of tomorrow, whose character and accomplishments
exemplify the ideals and values cherished by this great State and
nation; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to commend Melissa
Thomas and Naseem Dabiran upon the occasion of their selection as State
Finalists for the 2015 New York State Science Congress; and
WHEREAS, The STANYS New York State Science Congress was established in
1950, as a means to stimulate interest and proficiency in the sciences;
and
WHEREAS, Melissa Thomas and Naseem Dabiran participated in the Long
Island Science Congress, a regional science fair, on Wednesday, April
20, 2015, at the Cradle of Aviation Museum, Garden City, New York; and
WHEREAS, Melissa Thomas and Naseem Dabiran's outstanding science
project, Aromatase Immunohistochemistry in Alzheimer's Disease, was
chosen as a finalist to be presented at the New York State Science
Congress held on Saturday, May 30, 2015, at Brookhaven National Labora-
tory, Upton, New York; and
WHEREAS, Working as a team, Melissa Thomas and Naseem Dabiran
conducted their research for their stellar project under the guidance of
Dr. Anat Biegon at the State University of New York at Stony Brook; and
WHEREAS, A resident of New Hyde Park, New York, Melissa Thomas is the
daughter of Jiji and Princy Thomas; Naseem Dabiran is the daughter of
Ali and Alavieh Dabiran of Albertson, New York; and
WHEREAS, Both Melissa Thomas and Naseem Dabiran are three-year partic-
ipants in the Herricks High School Science Research program, mentored by
Herricks High School Science Research Teacher Renee Barcia; and
WHEREAS, Outstanding role models for their classmates, Melissa Thomas
and Naseem Dabiran may stand with pride in their achievements, experi-
encing the satisfaction of their labors and the joy of their accomplish-
ments, eager to face the challenge of new experiences as they continue
their education; and
WHEREAS, Melissa Thomas and Naseem Dabiran represent the potential
inherent in our most precious resource, our youth; this Legislative Body
is pleased to honor these young women, recognizing their achievements
and the promise of their future; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend Melissa Thomas and Naseem Dabiran upon the occasion of their
selection as State Finalists for the 2015 New York State Science
Congress; and be it further
RESOLVED, That copies of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Melissa Thomas and Naseem Dabiran.
