LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION congratulating the New York State Barge Canal
Historic District upon the occasion of its being placed on the National
Register of Historic Places on October 15, 2014

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to commend the preser-
vation of historical landmarks which served to enhance the growth of the
State of New York, ensuring that the complete history of our State and
Nation is shared with present and future generations of citizens; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to congratu-
late the New York State Barge Canal Historic District upon the occasion
of its being placed on the National Register of Historic Places; this
auspicious occasion was celebrated on Wednesday, October 15, 2014; and
WHEREAS, The National Register of Historic Places is the official list
of our country's most historic places worthy of preservation; adminis-
tered by the National Park Service, its purpose is to coordinate and
support public and private efforts to identify, evaluate, and protect
America's historic and archaeological resources; and
WHEREAS, Built between 1905 and 1918, the New York State Barge Canal
is a direct descendent of the Erie Canal, and is part of a network of
connecting waterways which have been in continuous operation since 1825;
and
WHEREAS, Remarkable in its scale and historical integrity, the New
York State Barge Canal National District spans 450 miles and includes
the four branches of the state's canal system: the Erie, Champlain,
Oswego, and Cayuga/Seneca Canals; and
WHEREAS, The New York State Barge Canal has played a pivotal role in
the growth and development of this great Empire State, as well as the
Nation; a testament to the American spirit of engineering and commerce,
today, the canal system continues to allow vessels to pass from the
Atlantic Ocean to the Great Lakes; and
WHEREAS, Steeped in a proud and distinguished past, the New York State
Barge Canal Historic District may take just pride in its unique histor-
ical contributions, as it looks forward to continuing to serve the
educational and cultural needs of the community; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
congratulate the New York State Barge Canal upon the occasion of its
being placed on the National Register of Historic Places; and be it
further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the New York State Barge Canal Historic District.
