LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring John Remsen upon the occasion of his
designation for special recognition after 60 years of dedicated service
to the Freeport American Legion, William Clinton Story Post No. 342

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to pay tribute to
those individuals and organizations that devote their energy, resources
and thoughtful care to improving the quality and character of life in
their communities; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor John
Remsen upon the occasion of his designation for special recognition
after 60 years of dedicated service to the Freeport American Legion,
William Clinton Story Post No. 342, celebrated on Wednesday, June 10,
2015, at the Elks Lodge of Freeport; and
WHEREAS, The American Legion is a veterans' service organization which
draws its membership from the men and women who have served in the Armed
Forces of the United States during a period of Congressionally recog-
nized war or armed conflict; and
WHEREAS, Born in Freeport, New York in 1933, John Remsen graduated
from Freeport High School before being drafted into the United States
Army in 1953; this esteemed man served his country with honor and
distinction as a member of the 45th Infantry Division Korea; and
WHEREAS, John Remsen was transferred to the 3rd Division, 58th Field
Artillery Battalion before he was rotated home in May of 1955, the same
year he joined the Freeport American Legion; and
WHEREAS, In 1957, John Remsen married the former Grace Dish, and
together the loving couple raised three children, John, Laura and Linda;
today, they are the proud grandparents of 11 beautiful grandchildren;
and
WHEREAS, Affectionately known throughout the community as a "Bayman"
and "Boatbuilder", John Remsen built the Splash Boat in 1992, which is
still in service today; he spent countless hours at his family's bay
house as a child, eventually building his own garvey in 1954; he went on
to build more than 100 garveys; and
WHEREAS, Active within his community, John Remsen has served as Presi-
dent of the Farmers and Booster Club; he has been on many parade commit-
tees, and is the longest serving American Legionnaire in Freeport, as
well as one of only a few Legionnaires who have served more than 60
years in the United States of America; and
WHEREAS, Rare indeed is the impressive dedication shown by an individ-
ual for the benefit of others which John Remsen has displayed throughout
his life; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is proudly moved to honor and commend
the members of the Freeport American Legion, past and present, who have
labored so conscientiously to secure and improve the quality of life for
the community it serves; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor John Remsen upon the occasion of his designation for special
recognition after 60 years of dedicated service to the Freeport American
Legion, William Clinton Story Post No. 342; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to John Remsen.
