LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commemorating the 175th Anniversary of the First
Presbyterian Church of Freeport, New York, to be celebrated on September
26, 2015

WHEREAS, Religious institutions, and the many spiritual, social and
educational benefits they confer, play a vital role in the development
of the moral fabric of a responsible citizenry; and
WHEREAS, It is the tradition of this State and this Nation to pay
tribute to those institutions and individuals who have contributed to
the ethical and spiritual values of their communities; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body takes pleasure in commemorating the
175th Anniversary of the First Presbyterian Church of Freeport, New
York, to be celebrated on Saturday, September 26, 2015, at the Freeport
Yacht Club, Freeport, New York; and
WHEREAS, The First Presbyterian Church has faithfully served the
community of Freeport since 1840; two decades later, it found its first
permanent home on Church Street; and
WHEREAS, With the influx of numerous new congregants, the First Pres-
byterian Church was moved to its current location at 178 South Ocean
Avenue in 1965; and
WHEREAS, Known as a very friendly organization, the First Presbyterian
Church prides itself on its dedicated service to its community; through-
out the years, members of the Church contribute to local food banks and
cook meals for the Interfaith Nutrition Network, providing healthy, hot
meals to people who are less fortunate; and
WHEREAS, Moreover, this vital religious institution collects coats,
offers food vouchers, and prepares and distributes a large number of
holiday food baskets to families in their neighborhood; the Church also
donates gifts to young children whose parents are disabled or out of
work; and
WHEREAS, The First Presbyterian Church also gives Metro Cards to those
individuals who are seeking employment or need transportation to a
doctors appointment, and provides school supplies to students in local
schools; and
WHEREAS, The members of the First Presbyterian Church reaches out to
other communities, and helps wherever they see a need; they supplied
housing, food, water, and other items during and after Hurricane Sandy;
and
WHEREAS, The First Presbyterian Church stands on the threshold of
tomorrow, prepared to meet the challenges of the coming decades while
retaining that spiritual resolve which characterizes its past; and
WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to take note of
enduring religious institutions and to bring such institutions to the
attention of the people of this Empire State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 175th Anniversary of the First Presbyterian Church of
Freeport, New York, fully confident that this commemoration reflects the
belief in those values which enhance the dignity and purpose of life;
and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the First Presbyterian Church of Freeport, New York.
