LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION mourning the death of Rabbi Stanley Platek,
distinguished citizen and devoted member of his community
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to bring full recogni-
tion and just tribute to those men and women of religious commitment who
accept the responsibility of moral leadership and render the wisdom of
human understanding; and
WHEREAS, Rabbi Stanley Platek, who filled the role of Rabbi Emeritus
at Hewlett-East Rockaway Jewish Centre, died on Tuesday, January 13,
2015; he faithfully served the congregation for more than three decades;
and
WHEREAS, After graduating from Brooklyn College with Honors in Philos-
ophy, Stanley Platek was ordained at the Jewish Theological Seminary of
America, receiving the degrees of Master of Hebrew Literature, DHL and
DD; and
WHEREAS, In addition, he earned the degree of MSW from the Wurzweiler
School of Social Work at Yeshiva University, and held a CSW from New
York State; and
WHEREAS, Rabbi Stanley Platek distinguished himself in his profession
and by his sincere dedication and substantial contribution to the
welfare of his community; and
WHEREAS, Upon graduation from the Seminary, Rabbi Stanley Platek
joined its faculty with the rank of Associate Professor of Talmud and
Rabbinics, a position he held for 16 years; he served as a staff member
at Camp Ramah for nearly two decades, and was a leader, with his wife,
of many USY Teen Tours; and
WHEREAS, Rabbi Stanley Platek's commitment to excellence, and his
spirit of humanity, carried over into all fields of enterprise, includ-
ing charitable and civic endeavors; and
WHEREAS, Active within the community he so ably served, Rabbi Stanley
Platek sat on the Rabbinical Assembly Law Committee for many years, as
well as the Youth Commission of the United Synagogue, the Rabbinic Cabi-
net of UJA, the Child Welfare Board of Nassau County, the Rabbinic Cabi-
net of the Jewish Theological Seminary, and the Board of Directors of
the Five Towns Senior Citizen Center; and
WHEREAS, In June of 2007, the main sanctuary of Hewlett-East Rockaway
Jewish Centre was named in his honor, and today serves as a reminder of
his presence, as well as the continuity of the community and the warm
ties which bind us together; and
WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to pay tribute to
citizens of the State of New York whose lifework and civic endeavor
served to enhance the quality of life in their communities and the great
State of New York; and
WHEREAS, Armed with a humanistic spirit, imbued with a sense of
compassion, and comforted by a loving family, Rabbi Stanley Platek
leaves behind a legacy which will long endure the passage of time and
will remain as a comforting memory to all he served and befriended; now,
therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
mourn the death of Rabbi Stanley Platek, distinguished citizen and
devoted member of his community; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the family of Rabbi Stanley Platek.
