LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commending the Rutgers Houses Resident Associ-
ation and recognizing Rutgers Houses upon the occasion of celebrating
its 50th Anniversary

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize insti-
tutions and organizations whose purpose and endeavor are dedicated to
the well-being of its communities and the mission of providing housing
and security to local residents; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to commend the Rutgers
Houses Resident Association and to recognize Rutgers Houses upon the
occasion of celebrating its 50th Anniversary; and
WHEREAS, Rutgers Houses was named in honor of Henry M. Rutgers, an
American Revolutionary War captain and property owner in what is now the
Lower East Side and Chinatown; and
WHEREAS, For half a century Rutgers Houses has provided affordable
housing to residents of the Lower East Side; and
WHEREAS, Currently, the five, 20-story buildings of Rutgers Houses sit
on more than five acres of land and include more than 700 apartments
that provide housing for more than 1,600 residents; and
WHEREAS, The Rutgers Houses Resident Association works to engage resi-
dents, act as a liaison between residents and the community, and advo-
cate on behalf of Rutgers Houses residents and for the greater good of
the Lower East Side; and
WHEREAS, The Rutgers Houses Resident Association provides tenants a
platform to both voice their concerns as well as share ideas for the
future of their community; and
WHEREAS, The annual Rutgers Houses family day attracts hundreds of
residents who take part in family friendly activities such as the tradi-
tional stick ball games played along Rutgers Street; and
WHEREAS, Rutgers Houses is home to the Rutgers Community Center, a
center located in the heart of the Lower East Side that acts as an
important resource for Rutgers families, and also as a community hub for
the Lower East Side; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend the Rutgers Houses Resident Association, and to recognize
Rutgers Houses upon the occasion of celebrating its 50th Anniversary;
and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the Rutgers Houses Resident Association.
