LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commending Priscilla A. Ruffin upon the occasion
of her designation for special recognition by East End Hospice for 25
years of leadership and dedication to end of life care
WHEREAS, Individuals who give of their time and energies and serve the
best interests of their communities are an asset beyond remuneration and
cannot be sufficiently extolled; and
WHEREAS, Priscilla A. Ruffin has given not only of her time and ener-
gies but also of her competence, intelligence and leadership and conse-
quently has been designated for special honor; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to commend Priscilla A.
Ruffin upon the occasion of her designation for special recognition by
East End Hospice for 25 years of leadership and dedication to end of
life care to be celebrated at a summer gala held on Saturday, June 27,
2015, at the Sandacres Estate in Quogue, New York; and
WHEREAS, Priscilla A. Ruffin graduated Magna Cum Laude from the SUNY
Brockport, and earned her Master's degree in Nursing from the SUNY Stony
Brook; she is a Registered Professional Nurse, and is a licensed Nurse
Practitioner in Psychiatry specializing in emotional trauma, grief and
bereavement; and
WHEREAS, This esteemed woman is the founding President and CEO of East
End Hospice, a free-standing community based interdisciplinary program
for end of life care located in Westhampton Beach, New York; and
WHEREAS, During her illustrious tenure, Priscilla A. Ruffin led East
End Hospice during its transition from a volunteer palliative care
program to a Medicare, New York State, and JCHAO certified hospice; she
also developed volunteer training programs, and designed curriculum for
professionals and volunteers in her field; and
WHEREAS, Dedicated to helping others, Priscilla A. Ruffin has estab-
lished innovative programs for the treatment of grief in children and
adults; she is the co-founder of Camp Good Grief, a day camp for griev-
ing children now in its 20th year; and
WHEREAS, In addition, Priscilla A. Ruffin is the co-author of JEREMY
GOES TO CAMP GOOD GRIEF, a book for grieving children, and has written
and lectured extensively on topics of grief, bereavement and end of life
care in the professional, academic and community setting; and
WHEREAS, Priscilla A. Ruffin has been called upon to contribute her
time and talents to countless civic and charitable endeavors and has
always given of herself unstintingly; she has graciously served on the
such boards as East End Community Services, the Nassau-Suffolk Health
Systems, Nassau-Suffolk Health Systems Agency, Eastern Suffolk School of
Music, New York State Hospice Association, the Diocesan Seminary Associ-
ation's Review Board, and the Suffolk County AIDS Advisory Commission;
and
WHEREAS, Throughout the entire period of her community service, a
period of constructive involvement, Priscilla A. Ruffin has stood
constant in dignity, good grace and humor; and
WHEREAS, Rare indeed is the impressive dedication shown by an individ-
ual for the benefit of others which Priscilla A. Ruffin has displayed
throughout her life; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when individ-
uals of such noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our atten-
tion, they should be celebrated and recognized by all the citizens of
this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend Priscilla A. Ruffin upon the occasion of her designation for
special recognition by East End Hospice for 25 years of leadership and
dedication to end of life care as its President and CEO; and be it
further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Priscilla A. Ruffin.
