LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION mourning the death of Joseph G. Manupella,
distinguished citizen and devoted member of his community

WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to pay tribute to
citizens of the State of New York whose lifework and civic endeavor
served to enhance the quality of life in their communities and the great
State of New York; and
WHEREAS, Joseph G. Manupella of Lansingburgh, New York, died on
Wednesday, June 3, 2015, at the age of 87; and
WHEREAS, Born and raised in Lansingburgh, Joseph G. Manupella was the
son of Joseph and Helen Maslott Manupella; he graduated from St.
Augustine's School and Lansingburgh High School; and
WHEREAS, At the age of 15, Joseph G. Manupella obtained a false birth
certificate in order to enlist in the military, and proudly served his
country as a member of the United States Navy during World War II; he
eagerly reenlisted in the United States Army after the Korean War broke
out, earning two Purple Hearts while valiantly defending our nation's
freedom; and
WHEREAS, Following the completion of his military service, Joseph G.
Manupella opened Hamburger Haven on 112th Street, and later became a
truant officer for the Lansingburgh School District; and
WHEREAS, This remarkable man distinguished himself in his profession
and by his sincere dedication and substantial contribution to the
welfare of his community; and
WHEREAS, A life-long member of the Boys & Girls Club, Joseph G. Manu-
pella had a positive impact on the lives of thousands of children who
benefited from his care, compassion, and mentorship; and
WHEREAS, In 1966, Joseph G. Manupella became the Executive Director of
the Lansingburgh Boys & Girls Club, where he strived to positively
transform the lives of generations of children who called the club their
second home; and
WHEREAS, A true pillar of his community, Joseph G. Manupella began his
outstanding 33-year political career in the Rensselaer County Legisla-
ture during the mid-1960s; he also served for 12 years as Chairman of
the County Legislature, and credited his success in politics to the
belief that politics is the art of compromise, and to never forget where
you came from; and
WHEREAS, Joseph G. Manupella's commitment to excellence and his spirit
of humanity, carried over into all fields of enterprise, including char-
itable and civic endeavors; and
WHEREAS, A man of faith, Joseph G. Manupella was a loyal and devoted
member of St. Augustine's Parish, a 40-year member of the St. Vincent
DePaul Society, and a tireless fundraiser for both St. Augustine's
School and the Sisters of St. Joseph; and
WHEREAS, Predeceased by his first wife, Margaret Gleason; his second
wife, Catherine Hayes; his son, John; and four siblings, George, Marion,
Helen, and Margaret, Joseph G. Manupella is survived by his devoted son
and daughter-in-law, Michael and Peggy; his four cherished grandchil-
dren, John, Patrick, Nicole and Danielle; sisters, Josephine, Henrietta,
and Rose Marie; one sister-in-law, Mary Ann; and one brother-in-law,
Gene; as well as several nieces and nephews; and
WHEREAS, Armed with a humanistic spirit and imbued with a sense of
compassion, Joseph G. Manupella leaves behind a legacy which will long
endure the passage of time and will remain as a comforting memory to all
he served and befriended; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
mourn the death of Joseph G. Manupella, distinguished citizen and
devoted member of his community; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the family of Joseph G. Manupella.
