LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commemorating the 70th Anniversary of Victory in
Japan Day

WHEREAS, The suffering and sacrifices of members of the United States
Armed Forces, who served so faithfully and courageously in World War II,
must be remembered with reverence so future generations will never
forget the cost of the peace they made possible; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commem-
orate the 70th Anniversary of Victory in Japan (V-J) Day, to be cele-
brated on August 14, 2015; and
WHEREAS, On August 14, 1945, the United States formally accepted the
unconditional surrender of the armed forces of Japan and the end of the
Imperial Japanese Army, officially ending World War II; with victory in
the Pacific came a collective celebration of the cessation of a war
which lasted six years, spread over three continents and resulted in the
death and suffering of millions; and
WHEREAS, Victory in Europe (V-E Day) on May 8 and Victory in Japan Day
on August 14 are a time when people across the globe pay tribute to
those who so courageously fought for this great nation; and
WHEREAS, The end of World War II was finalized aboard the battleship
USS Missouri on September 2, 1945, when representatives of the United
States and Japan signed the official Japanese surrender; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body, acting on behalf of
this Empire State, to honor the members of the United States Armed
Services who served so valiantly, and with such distinction, to end the
"Great War," and specifically to honor the more than 100,000 veterans of
World War II yet living in New York, who remind us by their example why
they were the "Greatest Generation"; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 70th Anniversary of Victory in Japan Day; and be it
further
RESOLVED, That copies of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the American Legion, Department of New York, Albany, New
York; the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Department of New York, Albany, New
York; and to the National Purple Heart Hall of Honor, New Windsor, New
York.
