LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Superintendent Leueen Smithling upon the
occasion of her retirement after eight years of distinguished service to
the Beaver River Central School District
WHEREAS, New York State's commitment to education is unparalleled; its
history and stature are secured by the superlative caliber of its educa-
tional professionals and the students they inspire; and
WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to acknowledge the
significant milestones in the distinguished careers of those outstanding
educational leaders, whose dedication and achievements have been instru-
mental in developing character and academic excellence in the young
people of New York State; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor
Superintendent Leueen Smithling upon the occasion of her retirement
after eight years of distinguished service to the Beaver River Central
School District; she will officially retire in the summer of 2015; and
WHEREAS, Since 2007, Leueen Smithling rendered faithful, conscientious
and valuable service to the Beaver River Central School District; in
addition, she has been a dedicated educator for almost four decades; and
WHEREAS, Born on January 8, 1954, in Cortland, New York, Leueen Miller
attended the State University of New York at Buffalo, and earned her
Bachelor's degree in Home Economics Education from Cornell University;
and
WHEREAS, In 1981, she furthered her education by obtaining her
Master's degree in Education from the State University of New York at
Oneonta; in 2002, she received an Educational Leadership Certificate in
Advanced Studies from the State University of New York at Oswego; and
WHEREAS, In 1976, Leueen Miller began her illustrious teaching career
as a New York Home Economics Teacher at Richfield Springs Central
School; on August 7, 1977, she married her husband, Timothy Smithling;
and
WHEREAS, In 1977, the Smithling family relocated to Northern New York,
and Leueen Smithling accepted the position of New York Home Economics
Teacher at Thousand islands Central School, a title she held until 1979;
she then moved on to Beaver River Central School, teaching Economics for
twenty-three years; and
WHEREAS, As a teacher, Leueen Smithling displayed a deep commitment to
providing instruction and emotional support, serving the young people of
her community with intelligence, compassion, and professionalism; and
WHEREAS, Leueen Smithling became interested in the administrative side
of education; from 2002- 2003, she held the position of Interim Assist-
ant Elementary Principal at Lowville Academy and Central School; and
WHEREAS, In 2003, Leueen Smithling was promoted to Principal of
Lowville Academy and Central School, New York, Middle School; after four
years of service, she accepted the esteemed role of Superintendent of
Schools at Beaver River Central School District, a position she will
hold until retiring in the summer of 2015; and
WHEREAS, In her capacity as Superintendent, Leueen Smithling has navi-
gated the district through a period of difficult staffing cuts, and
subsequently, led the "Save Our School" campaign; in addition, she over-
saw several major capital projects, including the renovation of the
auditorium, and the addition of a new track and turf field; and
WHEREAS, Throughout her successful career, Leueen Smithling has served
on the Board of Directors for the Rural School Association, and has been
a dedicated member of several educational organizations such as the New
York State School Boards Association, the New York State Council of
School Superintendents, and the New York State Association of Management
Advocates for School Labor Affairs; and
WHEREAS, Furthermore, Leueen Smithling was a previous Adjunct Instruc-
tor for the State University of New York at Oswego's Educational Admin-
istration Program; and
WHEREAS, For her outstanding service to the citizens of Northern New
York, Leueen Smithling was the recipient of the 2003 Oswego State
University John Readling Award; and
WHEREAS, In addition to her husband, Timothy, with her throughout have
been their three children, Brian (Pria), Brad (Jennifer) and Katelyn;
and two grandchildren, Elise and Allayna, all of whom feel privileged to
be a part of her life and rejoice in her achievements; and
WHEREAS, After her retirement, Leueen Smithling plans on reading some
good books, traveling with her husband, and spending time with her
beloved grandchildren; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to commend the
efforts of those individuals who work to support our proud tradition of
public education by providing their skills and talents to our schools;
now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Superintendent Leueen Smithling upon the occasion of her retire-
ment after eight years of distinguished service to the Beaver River
Central School District; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Superintendent Leueen Smithling.
