LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring George W. Sitser posthumously upon the
occasion of his designation as recipient of a Liberty Medal, the highest
honor bestowed upon an individual by the New York State Senate

WHEREAS, It is incumbent upon the people of the State of New York to
recognize and acknowledge those within our midst who have made signif-
icant contributions to the quality of life therein; and
WHEREAS, From time to time this Legislative Body takes note of certain
extraordinary individuals it wishes to recognize for their valued
contributions to the success and progress of society and publicly
acknowledge their endeavors which have enhanced the basic humanity among
us all; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to honor George W.
Sitser posthumously upon the occasion of his designation as recipient of
a Liberty Medal, the highest honor bestowed upon an individual by the
New York State Senate; and
WHEREAS, The New York State Senate Liberty Medal was established by
resolution and is awarded to individuals who have merited special
commendation for exceptional, heroic, or humanitarian acts on behalf of
their fellow New Yorkers; and
WHEREAS, Born on April 4, 1925 to John and Josephine Sitser in Cats-
kill, New York, George W. Sitser attended elementary school in Catskill
and went on to graduate from Ockawamick Central School in Philmont, New
York; and
WHEREAS, George Sitser began his military service as a member of the
United States Army on September 27, 1943; he was assigned to the 349th
Infantry, 88th Division in the European Theater of Operation; and
WHEREAS, Upon landing in Sicily on April 4, 1944, Private First Class
George Sitser participated in three major campaigns in Italy: the Rome-
Arno, North Apennines and Po Valley; he was honorably discharged on
November 15, 1945, at Camp Breckinridge, Kentucky; and
WHEREAS, During this time, Private First Class George Sitser was
awarded the Combat Infantry Badge, the World War II Victory Medal, Euro-
pean, African, Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon with three Bronze Stars and
the Good Conduct Medal for his valiant military service; and
WHEREAS, On November 5, 1947, George Sitser married the former Adeline
E. Cook of Red Hook, New York, at the Methodist Church in Philmont, and
together they raised two children; he worked for the Atlas Cement Compa-
ny until his retirement after 33 years of distinguished service; and
WHEREAS, George Sitser died on June 14, 2011, at the age of 86; he is
survived by his two children, Linda and Robert, as well as six grand-
children and five great-grandchildren; and
WHEREAS, Rare indeed is the impressive dedication shown by an individ-
ual for the benefit of others which George W. Sitser displayed through-
out his life; and
WHEREAS, Having exhibited his patriotism both at home and abroad,
George W. Sitser demonstrated his love for his country and merits forev-
ermore the highest respect of his State and Nation; and
WHEREAS, Our Nation's veterans deserve to be recognized, commended and
thanked by the people of the State of New York for their service and for
their dedication to their communities, their State and their Nation;
now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor George W. Sitser posthumously upon the occasion of his designation
as recipient of a Liberty Medal, the highest honor bestowed upon an
individual by the New York State Senate; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the family of George W. Sitser.
