LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION mourning the death of Jeffrey B. Wortmann, coura-
geous firefighter, distinguished citizen, and devoted member of his
community
WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to pay tribute to
citizens of the State of New York whose lifework and civic endeavor
served to enhance the quality of life in their communities and the great
State of New York; and
WHEREAS, Jeffrey B. Wortmann of Merrick, New York, died on Sunday,
November 22, 2015, at the age of 71; and
WHEREAS, Jeffrey B. Wortmann served his country honorably as a member
of the United States Navy from 1962 until being discharged on September
26, 1966; and
WHEREAS, Following his naval service, Jeffrey B. Wortmann went on to
become a decorated and dedicated member of the New York City Transit
Police which existed for more than 40 years before it was folded into
the New York Police Department in 1995; and
WHEREAS, Jeffrey B. Wortmann distinguished himself in his profession
and by his sincere dedication and substantial contribution to the
welfare of his community; and
WHEREAS, Throughout his 53 years of volunteering with the Merrick Fire
Department, Jeffrey B. Wortmann had been named an Honorary Chief and was
instrumental in training many of the Department's current leaders; and
WHEREAS, The Merrick Fire Department held a funeral service in remem-
brance of Jeffrey B. Wortmann with full departmental honors where an
oversized American flag was displayed over the street between the fire-
house and the Merrick Public Library; and
WHEREAS, This esteemed man was honored by his fellow firefighters,
most in dress blues, others in their firefighting turnout gear, as well
as members of the New York City Police Department; and
WHEREAS, Predeceased by his sister, Nancy Wagner, Jeffrey B. Wortmann
is survived by his wife, Florence; a daughter, Desiree (Andrew) Helbock;
two sons, Stephen (Abigail) Wortmann and Richard (Lisa) Wortmann; a
brother, Stephen Wortmann; and grandchildren Jessica and Gunner Helbock,
and Jeffrey, Raymond and Rebecca Wortmann; and
WHEREAS, Armed with a humanistic spirit and imbued with a sense of
compassion, Jeffrey B. Wortmann leaves behind a legacy which will long
endure the passage of time and will remain as a comforting memory to all
he served and befriended; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
mourn the death of Jeffrey B. Wortmann, courageous firefighter, distin-
guished citizen, and devoted member of his community; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the family of Jeffrey B. Wortmann.
