LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION congratulating Sister Kathleen Appler upon the
occasion of her election as Superioress General of the Daughters of
Charity worldwide community
WHEREAS, The character and richness of religious and community life in
this noble Empire State is nourished and fulfilled through the faithful
concern and selfless devotion of those who would commit their energies
and purpose to the ministry of others; and
WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to bring full
recognition and just tribute to those individuals and organizations
which distinguish themselves through their unremitting commitment and
service to humanity; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to congratulate Sister
Kathleen Appler upon the occasion of her election as Superioress General
of the Daughters of Charity worldwide community; this auspicious occa-
sion was celebrated on Monday, May 25, 2015, at the General Assembly of
the Daughters of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul in Paris, France; and
WHEREAS, In addition, a Meet and Greet celebration will be held in her
honor on Sunday, September 20, 2015, at Club Monarch in Yorkville, New
York; and
WHEREAS, A native of Whitesboro, New York, Kathleen Appler was the
second of 10 children born in her family and a 1970 graduate of the
Utica Catholic Academy; and
WHEREAS, Kathleen Appler earned her Associate's degree in Liberal Arts
from Maria Regina College and Bachelor of Arts degree in English Litera-
ture from Sacred Heart University; she also completed a Master's degree
in Elementary Education from SUNY Cortland and a Certification in Spir-
itual Direction from the Center for Spirituality at Work; and
WHEREAS, In April of 1973, Kathleen Appler accepted her religious
vocation, and entered the Community of the Daughters of Charity in
Boston, Massachusetts; and
WHEREAS, For over four decades, Sister Kathleen Appler has ably served
the Daughters of Charity in numerous important roles in the areas of
education, administration, and vocation and formation ministries; and
WHEREAS, Sister Kathleen Appler taught for many years at a multitude
of schools in such places as Syracuse, New York (Cathedral School,
1974-1975); Bridgeport, Connecticut (St. Ann's School, 1975-1979);
Utica, New York (Our Lady of Lourdes School, 1979-1982 and 1985-1995);
and Wilmington, Delaware (St. Peter's School, 1982-1985); and
WHEREAS, In addition, Sister Kathleen Appler served the community of
St. John's Parish Center in Brooklyn, New York, from 1995 to 2000, and
was local Superior of the borough from 1997 to 1999; and
WHEREAS, Prior to joining the Daughters of Charity General Council in
Paris in June of 2009, Sister Kathleen Appler served as Provincial of
the former Northeast Province based in Albany, New York; and
WHEREAS, In 2015, Sister Kathleen Appler became the first American in
the history of the Daughters of Charity to be elected Superioress Gener-
al of the worldwide community; she is also only the second person not
from France to ascend to this esteemed position; and
WHEREAS, Elected to a six year term, Sister Kathleen Appler will
provide leadership and guidance to 16,179 Daughters of Charity members
operating in 94 countries around the world; and
WHEREAS, This distinguished woman of faith has always given enlight-
enment, guidance and wisdom to the many entrusted to her care and has
administered abundantly and unstintingly to the spiritual and corporal
needs of all; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when religious
leaders of such noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our atten-
tion it is appropriate to publicly and jubilantly proclaim and commend
that individual for the edification of others; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
congratulate Sister Kathleen Appler upon the occasion of her election as
Superioress General of the Daughters of Charity worldwide community; and
be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Sister Kathleen Appler.
