LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION congratulating Lucile Schwendy upon the occasion
of celebrating her 104th Birthday

WHEREAS, Senior citizens bring a wealth of experience and knowledge to
the increasingly active roles they play in today's society; their past
contributions and future participation are a vital part of, and valuable
asset to, the fabric of community life and activity; and
WHEREAS, Lucile Hirschy was born on October 20, 1911, to Julia and
William Hirschy on their family farm on Ridge Road, Castorland, New
York; as a young child, she attended the local one-room schoolhouse, and
later, she was driven in her father's milk wagon to take the train to
Lowville Academy, where today, she is the oldest living graduate; and
WHEREAS, After graduating in 1929, Lucile Hirschy attended the Water-
town School of Commerce; she was then employed at the Carthage National
Savings Bank in Castorland, New York; and
WHEREAS, In 1935, Lucile Hirschy married Royal Schwendy; she fondly
remembers attending barn dances, where he played the fiddle; and
WHEREAS, The couple first lived in Castorland, New York, and then in
Naumberg, New York, where Lucile Schwendy enjoyed playing the roles of
wife, mother and homemaker; in 1959, the family moved to Beaver Falls,
New York, where Royal Schwendy managed the Community Hall; and
WHEREAS, For the last eight decades, Lucile Schwendy has been a faith-
ful member of the Beaver Falls United Methodist Church, as well as the
United Methodist Women organization; and
WHEREAS, In 1999, Lucile and Royal Schwendy relocated to Brookside
Senior Living Community in Lowville, where she liked to knit, make
quilts, read, and decipher the daily Word Jumble; she also regularly
attended chair exercise sessions and rooted for the New York Yankees;
and
WHEREAS, In 2006, her beloved husband of 71 years, Royal Schwendy,
passed away at the age of 95; since 2013, Lucile Schwendy has been a
much loved resident of the Residential Health Care Facility at Lewis
County General Hospital; and
WHEREAS, This exceptional centenarian, with her zest for life, has
inspired and enhanced the lives of her family and friends; and
WHEREAS, Along with her deceased husband, Royal, and daughter, Joan,
with her throughout have been her three children, Bruce, Sandra, and
John; her 14 grandchildren, and 18 great-grandchildren as well as five
great-great-grandchildren; and
WHEREAS, Lucile Schwendy's love of music, nature, down home cooking,
and passion for knitting, sewing, and the Bible, has been passed down
through multiple generations; she has always led by example with her
patience, kindness, and gentle soul; and
WHEREAS, This distinguished woman has experienced the incredible joys
and sorrows characteristic of and reserved for those with the stamina
and courage to savor a full life; and
WHEREAS, This beloved woman has enriched the lives of those around her
through her joyous and sincere love for others and through the quiescent
charm and wisdom which comes only from a fullness of years; and
WHEREAS, It is the intent of this Legislative Body to publicly recog-
nize those who have reached such a remarkable age and who have witnessed
and celebrated the innovations, cultural developments and awesome
achievements of this country during the last century, while themselves
contributing to the growth and excellence of this great Empire State;
now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
congratulate Lucile Schwendy upon the occasion of celebrating her 104th
Birthday; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Lucile Schwendy.
