LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commending John J. Mazzaferro upon the occasion
of his retirement after 36 years of distinguished service to the City of
Rome, New York
WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to recognize and
honor those distinguished citizens of this great Empire State who have
devoted themselves to faithfully serving the best interests of their
community and the needs of its residents; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commend
John J. Mazzaferro upon the occasion of his retirement after 36 years of
distinguished service to the City of Rome, New York; and
WHEREAS, In 1979, John J. Mazzaferro was elected to the esteemed posi-
tion of President of the Common Council, a title from which he will
officially retire on December 31, 2015; well-liked and respected, he is
recognized for being the longest running Council President serving the
City of Rome; and
WHEREAS, In his capacity as President, John J. Mazzaferro worked dili-
gently to respond to constituents' concerns, and has been actively
involved in the business community, economic development, and youth
programs, as well as senior citizen assistance; and
WHEREAS, Throughout his 36-year career, John J. Mazzaferro initiated
numerous programs which benefited the residents of Rome, New York,
including a snow shoveling program which matches volunteers with seniors
who need help clearing their sidewalks, walkways and steps, and with
cooperation from the Rome Police Department, he organized the "Are You
Okay" Program; and
WHEREAS, For almost four decades, John J. Mazzaferro diligently worked
to revitalize Rome, New York, by developing both Dominick and James
Streets, upgrading the water filtration plant, and working with the Real
Property Committee to resell tax-foreclosed parcels for redevelopment;
and
WHEREAS, John J. Mazzaferro also enjoyed serving as a marriage offi-
cer, a role he would like to continue in 2016; and
WHEREAS, In addition, John J. Mazzaferro and his wife, Maryann, will
continue to sell two cookbooks, filled with recipes submitted from the
residents of Rome, New York, in an effort to raise funds for the reno-
vation of Kennedy Arena; and
WHEREAS, For his superlative dedication and service to the town in
which he works and lives, John J. Mazzaferro was awarded the Community
Leadership Award by the Rome Area Chapter of the American Red Cross; and
WHEREAS, After his well-earned retirement, John J. Mazzaferro plans on
spending more time with his family and will remain interested in local
politics; and
WHEREAS, Throughout his illustrious career, John J. Mazzaferro served
the City of Rome, New York with intelligence and caring dedication,
continuously striving to effectively fulfill the duties of his position;
and
WHEREAS, Sincerely loved and greatly respected by all those with whom
he worked, John J. Mazzaferro will be remembered for his honesty, integ-
rity, keen sense of duty and ability to show a unique grasp of human
problems in his official acts; and
WHEREAS, With him throughout have been his wife, Maryann, and their
daughter, both of whom feel privileged to be a part of his life and
rejoice in his achievements; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when individ-
uals of such noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our atten-
tion, they should be celebrated and recognized by all the citizens of
the great State of New York; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend John J. Mazzaferro upon the occasion of his retirement after 36
years of distinguished service to the City of Rome, New York, and to
wish him continued success in all his future endeavors; and be it
further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to John J. Mazzaferro.
