LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commending Marie Carbone Regan upon the occasion
of her retirement after 18 years of distinguished service to the Town of
Potsdam, New York

WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to recognize and
honor those distinguished citizens of this great Empire State who have
devoted themselves to faithfully serving the best interests of their
community and the needs of its residents; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commend
Marie Carbone Regan upon the occasion of her retirement after 18 years
of distinguished service to the Town of Potsdam, New York; and
WHEREAS, Marie Carbone was born on July 18, 1936, to Italian immi-
grants, Josephine Trimboli and Dominick Carbone, in Massena, New York,
where she grew up with her two sisters, JoAnne and Stephanie, and one
brother, Joseph; and
WHEREAS, In 1957, Marie Carbone Regan earned her Bachelor's degree in
both American and British literature, with minors in Speech and Drama,
from the State University of New York (SUNY) at Albany; she later went
on to receive her Master of Arts degree in English from SUNY Potsdam in
1977; and
WHEREAS, In addition, Marie Carbone Regan obtained a permanent secon-
dary-level English certification and was a well-loved and dedicated
teacher at Massena Central High School for several years; and
WHEREAS, Marie Carbone Regan then became a Professor of English and
the Humanities, and taught numerous writing and literature courses at
SUNY Canton; for more than 25 years, she served as the Chair of the
Department of English and Humanities, a faculty Senator, and was a
member of the SUNY Faculty Senate Executive Committee; and
WHEREAS, In 1996, SUNY Canton presented Marie Carbone Regan with its
Distinguished Faculty Award, and went on to name its 2007 Honors Convo-
cation in her honor; she was also recognized for her achievements by
being named a SUNY Distinguished Service Professor in 2007, the title
with which she retired; following her service as a faculty member, she
was appointed to the SUNY Canton College Council in 2013; and
WHEREAS, In 1997, Marie Carbone Regan was elected to the Potsdam Town
Council, and just a year later, she was appointed to the title of Deputy
Supervisor; in 2004, she was elected as Town Supervisor, a position from
which she will officially retire on December 15, 2015; and
WHEREAS, In her capacity as Town Supervisor, Marie Carbone Regan has
overseen legislation, staffing and finances for the municipality,
including for the offices of the Clerk and the Town Court; under her
luminous leadership, the municipality completed construction of a new
Town Hall in 2013, and renovated its previous downtown hall into a new
facility that will serve both the Village and Town of Potsdam; and
WHEREAS, A dedicated member of the community in which she lives and
works, Marie Carbone Regan proudly served as the Chair of the Bicenten-
nial Celebration for the Town of Potsdam, which marked the 200th Anni-
versary of its founding in 2006; and
WHEREAS, Furthermore, Marie Carbone Regan was a founding Board Member
and has served as both a Teacher and Administrator for Stimulating
Opportunities After Retirement (SOAR), which offers peer learning oppor-
tunities to North Country seniors; she also held the title of President
of the St. Lawrence County Chapter of the American Association of
University Women; and
WHEREAS, Marie Carbone Regan serves as a liaison to the Potsdam Cham-
ber of Commerce, and is a member of the North Country Regional Economic

Development Council; in recognition of her numerous years of leadership
and superlative service, she was the recipient of many awards and acco-
lades including the 2013 Silas Wright Award; and
WHEREAS, Throughout her illustrious career, Marie Carbone Regan served
the Town of Potsdam, New York, with intelligence and caring dedication,
continuously striving to effectively fulfill the duties of her position;
and
WHEREAS, Sincerely loved and greatly respected by all those with whom
she worked, Marie Carbone Regan will be remembered for her honesty,
integrity, keen sense of duty and ability to show a unique grasp of
human problems in her official acts; and
WHEREAS, With her throughout have been her husband of 58 years, Robert
John Regan; their four daughters, Shawn, Denise, Bridget, and Stephanie;
one son, Gavin; and 11 grandchildren, all of whom feel privileged to be
a part of her life and rejoice in her achievements; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when individ-
uals of such noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our atten-
tion, they should be celebrated and recognized by all the citizens of
the great State of New York; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend Marie Carbone Regan upon the occasion of her retirement after 18
years of distinguished service to the Town of Potsdam, New York, and to
wish her continued success in all her future endeavors; and be it
further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Marie Carbone Regan.
