LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION mourning the death of Walter Fedourich, distin-
guished citizen and devoted member of his community
WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to pay tribute to
citizens of the State of New York whose lifework and civic endeavor
served to enhance the quality of life in their communities and the great
State of New York; and
WHEREAS, Walter Fedourich of Binghamton, New York, died on September
25, 2015, at the age of 93, after finishing his favorite breakfast and
seeing the New York Giants win the night before; during his last days,
he was vibrant and joyous and shared time with family and friends; and
WHEREAS, Walter Fedourich loved being with and meeting people; he
loved listening to everyone's stories and everyone loved hearing his
tales; his beautiful infectious smile, twinkle in his eyes and his kind
and caring demeanor made everyone adore him; and
WHEREAS, This remarkable man knew how to make people smile and feel
wanted; his two favorite sayings were, "You made my day" and "Old age
ain't for sissies"; and
WHEREAS, Walter Fedourich served his country as a member of the United
States Navy during World War II; upon returning home, he established the
Fedo Sign Company in 1952 and operated it through 2015; and
WHEREAS, Walter "Fedo" Fedourich distinguished himself in his profes-
sion and by his sincere dedication and substantial contribution to the
welfare of his community; his commitment to excellence, and his spirit
of humanity, carried over into all fields of enterprise, including char-
itable and civic endeavors; and
WHEREAS, He was elected to the Broome County Board of Supervisors in
1956 and again in 1957; he was then elected to the Binghamton City Coun-
cil the following year and served through 1969; and appointed Public
Works Commissioner in 1970 and held that position through 1981; and
WHEREAS, Walter Fedourich held numerous offices, including City Coun-
cilman: Minority Leader 1967-1969, President Pro-Tem 1962, and President
of City Council 1964; he served on the Board of Contract & Supply and
Board of Apportionment, and the Binghamton Urban Renewal Agency, 1970
through 1981; and
WHEREAS, Furthermore, Walter Fedourich was the Acting Mayor of Bing-
hamton in 1960, 1961, and 1963; an active and lifelong member of Holy
Spirit Byzantine Church, he was also a lifelong member of First Ward
American Legion Post 1254, and a member of The Last Mans' Club American
Legion Post 1254, the Binghamton Moose Club, Binghamton Lions Club and
Broome County Chamber of Commerce; and
WHEREAS, Predeceased by his wife, Anne; daughter, Paulette; brother,
Joseph; two sisters, Mary Ainsworth and Millie Williams; and a nephew,
William Kostun, Walter Fedourich is survived by his son and daughter-in-
law, Walter and Judy; son, Richard (Renelle) Fedourich; granddaughter,
Ursi (Mike) Vaillancourt; two great-grandchildren, Trinity and Mason
Vaillancourt; seven nieces, Nancy (Gene) Labare, Madeline (Dan)
Matthews, Dolores (Lou) Ferraro, Marlene Hessberger, Milly Fedourich,
Beverly Moschak and Helen Kostun; and one nephew, Joseph (Carol) Fedou-
rich, as well as many great nieces, great nephews and dear friends; and
WHEREAS, Armed with a humanistic spirit and imbued with a sense of
compassion, Walter Fedourich leaves behind a legacy which will long
endure the passage of time and will remain as a comforting memory to all
he served and befriended; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
mourn the death of Walter Fedourich, and to offer its deepest condo-
lences to his family; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the family of Walter Fedourich.
