LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION congratulating J. Peter Clavin upon the occasion
of his induction into the 2016 Fort Hamilton High School Alumni Associ-
ation Hall of Fame on February 13, 2016
WHEREAS, From time to time this Legislative Body takes note of certain
extraordinary individuals it wishes to recognize for their valued
contributions to the success and progress of society and publicly
acknowledge their endeavors which have enhanced the basic humanity among
us all; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to congratulate J.
Peter Clavin upon the occasion of his induction into the 2016 Fort
Hamilton High School Alumni Association Hall of Fame, to be celebrated
at its Dinner Dance on Saturday, February 13, 2016, at Rex Manor, Brook-
lyn, New York; and
WHEREAS, Renowned community leader and businessman, J. Peter Clavin
graduated from Fort Hamilton High School in 1971; two years later, he
obtained his degree from the State University of New York at Farmingdale
and then continued his professional education at the Simmons Institute
of Funeral Service in Syracuse, New York; and
WHEREAS, Today, J. Peter Clavin is the owner and operator of Joseph P.
Clavin Sons, Inc., a funeral home founded in 1886; since the 1940s, this
successful business has been located in Bay Ridge, New York; and
WHEREAS, J. Peter Clavin has been called upon to contribute his time
and talents to countless civic and charitable endeavors and has always
given of himself unstintingly; and
WHEREAS, Dedicated to the community in which he both works and lives,
J. Peter Clavin has served as a member or former member of numerous
organizations including the Bay Ridge Parks and Waterfront Council,
Municipal Club of Brooklyn, Emerald Association of Long Island, Knights
of Columbus - Thomas Dongan Council No. 1251, St. Patrick's Society of
Brooklyn, Catholic Cemeteries Association, and Bishop's Coat of Arms
Club, as well as Catholic Charities; and
WHEREAS, A born leader, J. Peter Clavin has held the position of Pres-
ident in several clubs including the Cathedral Club of Brooklyn, Lions
Club of Bay Ridge, Men's Club of Bay Ridge, Bayfort Benevolent Associ-
ates, Sons of the American Legion, 12:30 Club of Bay Ridge, Downtown
Speakers Association, and the Fourth Avenue Men's Association; and
WHEREAS, J. Peter Clavin is also a charter member of the Fort Hamilton
Citizens Action Committee and has been affiliated with the Bay Ridge
Festival of the Arts, Narrows Community Theater, and the Juvenile
Diabetes Research Foundation; he proudly holds the title of Acting Adju-
tant of the Michael E. Clavin Post No. 1408 of the American Legion, and
serves on the Board of Trustees for New York University Langone Lutheran
Augustana Center; and
WHEREAS, For his remarkable dedication to his community, J. Peter
Clavin has been the recipient of numerous awards by various organiza-
tions including the Catholic Guardian Society, the New York City Police
Department's Sergeants Benevolent Association, and Detectives' Endowment
Association, as well as the United States Submarine Veterans of World
War II; and
WHEREAS, Moreover, in 1993, J. Peter Clavin was proudly knighted by
His Eminence John Cardinal O'Connor as a Knight of the Holy Sepulcher at
Saint Patrick's Cathedral in Manhattan; and
WHEREAS, In 1998, J. Peter Clavin was selected as the Lion's Club's
Man of the Year as well as Co-Grand Marshal of the Bay Ridge St.
Patrick's Day Parade; one year later, he served as the Grand Marshal of
the 1999 Ragamuffin Day Parade; and
WHEREAS, Furthermore, The Salvation Army's Brooklyn Advisory Board
selected J. Peter Clavin as its 1999 Man of the Year, and one year
later, the Advocates for Services for the Blind Multihandicapped, Inc.
named him their 2000 Advocate of the Year; and
WHEREAS, In 2008, J. Peter Clavin received the Service to Youth Award
by the Catholic Committee on Scouting in the Diocese of Brooklyn, as
well as the Bay Ridge Community Council's prestigious Civic Award; in
2011, The Guild for Exceptional Children presented him with its Humani-
tarian Award; and
WHEREAS, Throughout the entire period of his community service, a
period of constructive involvement, J. Peter Clavin has stood constant
in dignity, good grace and humor; and
WHEREAS, Rare indeed is the impressive dedication shown by an individ-
ual for the benefit of others which J. Peter Clavin has displayed
throughout his life; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when individ-
uals of such noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our atten-
tion, they should be celebrated and recognized by all the citizens of
this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
congratulate J. Peter Clavin upon the occasion of his induction into the
2016 Fort Hamilton High School Alumni Association Hall of Fame on Febru-
ary 13, 2016; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to J. Peter Clavin.
