LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Owen J. Soraghan posthumously upon the
occasion of his designation for special recognition by Albany County at
its Honor-A-Veteran Ceremony on October 6, 2014

WHEREAS, Members of the Armed Services from the State of New York, who
have served so valiantly and honorably in wars in which this country's
freedom was at stake, as well as in the preservation of peace in peace-
time, deserve a special salute; and
WHEREAS, It is the intent of this Legislative Body to commend those
who have served in times of active conflict, as well as those who have
served in times of peace; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor Owen
J. Soraghan posthumously upon the occasion of his designation for
special recognition by Albany County at its Honor-A-Veteran Ceremony for
his courageous and dedicated service to his country, which was held on
Monday, October 6, 2014, at the American Legion Joseph E. Zaloga Post
1520, Albany, New York; and
WHEREAS, In June of 1993, a committee was formed by the Albany County
Veterans Bureau known as the Albany County Honor-A-Veteran Committee to
honor deceased Albany County veterans who have served their country in
time of conflict; the Honor-A-Veteran Program takes place monthly on the
first Monday of each month; and
WHEREAS, Born on May 25, 1901, in County Cavin, Ireland, Owen J. Sora-
ghan left Ireland, and moved to Albany, New York; and
WHEREAS, Owen J. Soraghan served his country with honor and
distinction as a member of the United States Army during World War I,
stationed in France and Belgium from 1918-1919; and
WHEREAS, A Private 1st Class in the C.O.B. Infantry, Owen J. Soraghan
was awarded numerous awards and medals in recognition of his outstanding
service, including the revered Purple Heart; and
WHEREAS, After his commendable military career, Owen J. Soraghan held
the position of Supervisor of the City of Albany Department of Public
Works, and served as Co-founder and Second Commander of the Louis W.
Oppenheim V.F.W. Post 1019, Albany; and
WHEREAS, Owen J. Soraghan is survived by his loving son, Owen, who
feels privileged to be a part of his life and rejoiced in his achieve-
ments; and
WHEREAS, Having exhibited his patriotism both at home and abroad, Owen
J. Soraghan demonstrated his love for his country and truly merits
forevermore, the highest respect of his State and Nation; and
WHEREAS, Owen J. Soraghan's service to his country deserves to be
recognized and commended by the people of the State of New York; now,
therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Owen J. Soraghan posthumously upon the occasion of his designation
for special recognition by Albany County at its Honor-A-Veteran Ceremony
on October 6, 2014; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the family of Owen J. Soraghan.
