LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Gerald R. Jacobson posthumously upon the
occasion of receiving the Bronze Star Medal for meritorious service
during the Korean Conflict

WHEREAS, Members of the Armed Services from the State of New York, who
have served so valiantly and honorably in wars in which this country's
freedom was at stake, as well as in the preservation of peace in peace-
time, deserve a special salute from this Legislative Body; and
WHEREAS, Members of the Armed Services from the State of New York who
have served so valiantly and honorably during the Korean Conflict, in
particular those who have earned one of our Nation's highest honors,
deserve a special salute from this Legislative Body; and
WHEREAS, The Bronze Star Medal is the fourth-highest military deco-
ration awarded to individuals who distinguish themselves by performing
acts of heroism or meritorious achievement in connection with military
operations against an armed enemy; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to honor Gerald R.
Jacobson posthumously upon the occasion of receiving the Bronze Star
Medal for meritorious service during the Korean Conflict; and
WHEREAS, Corporal Gerald R. Jacobson proudly served his country as a
member of the United States Army during the Korean Conflict; assigned to
the 140th Tank Battalion, he distinguished himself by heroic achievement
on Hill 812, Korea, during the period of June 1-4, 1953; and
WHEREAS, Following an intense enemy artillery and mortar barrage on
friendly tank positions, a fanatical enemy force launched an attack; and
WHEREAS, Throughout the ensuing battle, Corporal Gerald R. Jacobson
gallantly fought from his tank until it was destroyed by enemy artillery
fire; with his tank immobilized, he withdrew to a nearby bunker and
continued his valiant stand; and
WHEREAS, Although completely surrounded by the enemy, Corporal Gerald
R. Jacobson, lacking food, water and communications, courageously held
off the adversary for over 30 hours until he was relieved by a friendly
counterattack; and
WHEREAS, The determined efforts and calm demeanor of Corporal Gerald
R. Jacobson, under enemy fire, served as an inspiration to all and won
him both respect and admiration from his superiors and subordinates
alike; and
WHEREAS, The freedoms and security we cherish as Americans come at a
very high price for those serving in the military in times of conflict;
it is fitting and proper that we who are the beneficiaries of those who
risk their lives, leaving their families behind, express our appreci-
ation and eternal gratitude for their sacrifices and courageous acts;
now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Gerald R. Jacobson posthumously upon the occasion of receiving the
Bronze Star Medal for meritorious service during the Korean Conflict;
and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the family of Gerald R. Jacobson.
