LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commending the Armory Foundation for its many
years of exemplary service to the community, the State of New York, and
the United States
WHEREAS, The Armory Foundation and its founder, Norbert W. Sander, Jr.,
MD, have made such a contribution to the uptown community, the city and
the State of New York through its programming in athletics and educa-
tion; and
WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to commend the
Armory Foundation for its many years of exemplary service to the commu-
nity, the State of New York, and the United States; and
WHEREAS, The Armory Foundation serves over 125,000 students each year,
providing access to the greatest and most heavily utilized indoor track
in the United States by holding hundreds of competitions, including the
Millrose games, a century old running tradition; its youth jamborees
which touch thousands of the youngest athletes; and educational programs
such as college readiness for New York City's high school students, a
program which has yielded a 95% graduation rate; and
WHEREAS, The Armory Foundation has collaborated with elected officials
to stage the annual "Uptown Games" event, a track and field training
exercise for students of upper Manhattan, an area suffering from an
above average childhood obesity rate, to teach the fun and importance of
exercise and health living, in conjunction with schools in the communi-
ty; and provide ongoing free access for public schools to their state-
of-the-art facility for long-term and continued benefit; and
WHEREAS, The Armory Foundation, and Norbert Sander, Jr., who is the
only New Yorker to win the famed New York City Marathon, have touched
the lives of so many New Yorkers and young athletes across America, and
allowed them to achieve their dreams; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when an organ-
ization of such noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our atten-
tion it is appropriate to publicly proclaim and commend those individ-
uals for the edification and emulation of others; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend the Armory Foundation for its many years of exemplary service to
the community, the State of New York, and the United States; and be it
further
RESOLVED, That copies of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Norbert W. Sander, Jr., and the Armory Foundation.
