LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commemorating the 40th Anniversary of Capital
Roots for 40 years of valuable service to New York's Capital Region

WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to recognize that the
quality and character of life in the communities across New York State
are reflective of the concerned and dedicated efforts of those organiza-
tions that would devote themselves to the welfare of the community and
its citizenry; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commem-
orate the 40th Anniversary of Capital Roots; this auspicious milestone
was celebrated during its Autumn Evening in the Garden on September 17,
2015, at the Hilton Garden Inn, Troy, New York; and
WHEREAS, Capital Roots started in 1975 as a community service project
of Garden Way, the former manufacturer of Troy-Bilt Lawn and Garden
Equipment; and
WHEREAS, This vital organization was established to improve nutrition
in New York's Capital Region through organizing community gardens,
providing healthy food access, offering nutritional and horticultural
education and coordinating urban greening programs; and
WHEREAS, Capital Roots began its Community Garden Program in 1975;
since then, 50 Community Gardens have been created and currently, 4,000
Capital District families have food on their table; and
WHEREAS, Capital Roots has expanded to more than just Community
Gardens; additional programs that have been included are: Urban Greening
Program, the Squash Hunger Program, the Veggie Mobile, the Produce
Project, the Healthy Stores Program, and the VeggieRx Program, just to
name a few; and
WHEREAS, Recently, Capital Roots hosted the Grand Opening of their
Urban Grow Center which has become their Headquarters and Regional Food
Hub; this facility will help Capital Roots triple its produce distrib-
ution capacity, which in turn, will allow them to assist more families
in the community; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that those who
enhance the well-being and vitality of their community and have shown a
long and sustained commitment to excellence certainly have earned the
recognition and applause of all the citizens of this great Empire State;
now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 40th Anniversary of Capital Roots, and to wish them
continued success in the future; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Capital Roots.
