LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION mourning the death of Dr. Susan G. Gordon, a
brilliant pediatrician, dedicated educator, distinguished citizen and
devoted member of her community
WHEREAS, It is with great sorrow and deep regret that this Legislative
Body records the passing of Dr. Susan G. Gordon, noting the significance
of her purposeful life and accomplishments; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Susan G. Gordon of Pomona, New York, died on Monday,
January 25, 2016; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Susan G. Gordon, affectionately known as Dr. Susan,
distinguished herself in her profession and by her sincere dedication
and substantial contribution to the welfare of her community; and
WHEREAS, After graduating from Howard University College of Medicine,
Dr. Susan G. Gordon became a pediatric physician and practiced in Haver-
straw, New York, and in Rockland County; and
WHEREAS, In 1958, Dr. Susan G. Gordon became an Associate Professor of
Pediatrics first at the New York Medical College, then Columbia Univer-
sity's College of Physicians and Surgeons; in addition to teaching as an
Associate Professor, she taught for 25 years at Metropolitan Hospital
and the Children's Hospital of the New York Presbyterian Hospital; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Susan G. Gordon was also a Licentiate of the American
Board of Pediatrics and a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics;
and
WHEREAS, Dedicated to her community, Dr. Susan G. Gordon was a member
of the East Ramapo Central School District Board of Education, and
served as President for three years; she is remembered for being an
enthusiastic participant at the Parent and Teacher Association meetings,
school board elections, and various other community matters; and
WHEREAS, A devoted advocate for civil and human rights, Dr. Susan G.
Gordon proudly supported the integration of the East Ramapo Central
School District during the 1950s and 1960s; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Susan G. Gordon cared for mankind as a whole, and strived
to care for the overall health and education of those in her community;
for 20 years, she served as a member and President of the Health Center
of the Lexington School for the Deaf Board; and
WHEREAS, From 1978-1981, Dr. Susan G. Gordon served as a member of The
National Panel on the Measurement of the Program Effects of Head Start;
and
WHEREAS, Moreover, Dr. Susan G. Gordon held the title of President of
the Martin Luther King Multipurpose Center Board of Trustees, founded
the Harriet Tubman Child Health and Guidance Clinic in Harlem, and
founded the CEJJES Institute; together, she and her husband established
Gordon and Gordon Associates in Human Development; and
WHEREAS, For her exceptional work in the field of education, Dr. Susan
G. Gordon was the recipient of numerous awards and accolades including
the 1999 Children's Champion Award by the Early Child Consortium of
Rockland County; in 2000, she was recognized by the African American
Chamber of Commerce of Westchester and Rockland Counties at the Women's
History Month Luncheon; and
WHEREAS, In that same year, the classrooms and computer center of the
Martin Luther King Multi-purpose Center, Inc., Spring Valley, New York,
were dedicated as the Susan G. Gordon, M.D. Education Corridor, and in
2006, Dr. Susan G. Gordon and her husband, Ed, were inducted into the
Rockland County Civil Rights Hall of Fame; and
WHEREAS, Throughout her life, Dr. Susan G. Gordon pursued a lifelong
mission to help others and create a welcoming community for everyone;
this exceptional woman focused on unity through education as a profes-
sional educator and respected member of the school board; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Susan G. Gordon lived an immensely beautiful life built
on care, kindness, and respect, touching the lives of so many people
within her community; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Susan G. Gordon is survived by her husband of over six
decades, Dr. Edmund W. Gordon, four children, and nine grandchildren, as
well as one great-grandson; and
WHEREAS, Armed with a humanistic spirit and imbued with a sense of
compassion, Dr. Susan G. Gordon leaves behind a legacy which will long
endure the passage of time and will remain as a comforting memory to all
she served and befriended; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
mourn the death of Dr. Susan G. Gordon, brilliant pediatrician, dedi-
cated educator, distinguished citizen and devoted member of her communi-
ty; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the family of Dr. Susan G. Gordon.
