LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring John A. Murphy upon the occasion of his
retirement after 44 years of distinguished service to the Rockland Coun-
ty Legislature
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize and honor
those distinguished citizens of this great Empire State who have devoted
themselves to faithfully serving the best interests of their community
and the needs of its residents; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor John
A. Murphy upon the occasion of his retirement after 44 years of distin-
guished service to the Rockland County Legislature; he officially
announced his retirement in January of 2015, but will continue to serve
his community; and
WHEREAS, The longest serving Legislator in the history of Rockland
County, John A. Murphy has diligently represented the people of District
16, which includes the towns of Blauvelt, Pearl River, Orangeburg, Spar-
kill and Tappan since first being elected in 1971; and
WHEREAS, This esteemed man has been called upon to contribute his time
and talents to countless civic and charitable endeavors and has always
given of himself unstintingly; he is a member of the Marine Corps Leag-
ue, Rockland County Psychiatric Center Board of Visitors, Petition for
Paula, and the Lourdes Kids of Rockland; and
WHEREAS, Active in his community, John A. Murphy is also known for
being a passionate advocate for the developmentally disabled; currently,
he serves as President of Camp Venture, a group that serves those with
special needs; and
WHEREAS, Moreover, John A. Murphy is the co-founder of Loeb House,
which aids in the service of the mentally ill, a proud supporter of
Homes for Heroes, which assists homeless veterans; in addition, he is
well known for his help in creating the County Child Advocacy Center in
New York State; and
WHEREAS, The recipient of numerous accolades for his outstanding
service, John A. Murphy was inducted into the Rockland County Civil
Rights Hall of Fame, and received an Honorary Doctor of Humanities
degree from St. Thomas Aquinas and Dominican College; and
WHEREAS, In his official acts, John A. Murphy was governed by a keen
sense of duty and always showed a unique grasp of human problems, earn-
ing him the admiration, esteem and affection of his colleagues; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that those public
servants who enhance the quality of life in their community and have
shown a long and sustained commitment to the maintenance of high stand-
ards in their profession, certainly have earned the recognition and
applause of all the citizens of this great Empire State; now, therefore,
be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor John A. Murphy upon the occasion of his retirement after 44 years
of distinguished service to the Rockland County Legislature; and be it
further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to John A. Murphy.
