LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring John Winchester upon the occasion of his
induction into the Warwick Valley Boys Basketball Hall of Fame Class of
2016 by the Warwick Valley Central School District

WHEREAS, Excellence and success in competitive sports can be achieved
only through strenuous practice, team play and team spirit, nurtured by
dedicated coaching and strategic planning; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to honor those indi-
viduals whose exceptional athletic prowess leaves an enduring legacy in
their communities; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor John
Winchester upon the occasion of his induction into the Warwick Valley
Boys Basketball Hall of Fame Class of 2016 by the Warwick Valley Central
School District which was celebrated on Friday, January 22, 2016; and
WHEREAS, The outstanding efforts, commitment, and past accomplishments
of John Winchester on the hardwood have helped shape the history of the
Warwick Valley Wildcats Basketball Team and serve as an inspiration to
the current generation of players; and
WHEREAS, A 1954 graduate of Warwick Valley High School, John Winches-
ter was a four-year varsity player and three-year starter from 1950-54,
under the tutelage of Head Coach C. Ashley Morgan; and
WHEREAS, Known for his one hand set shot, this esteemed Captain of the
1953-54 team was the leading scorer in his senior year with an average
of 17.1 points per game; he also averaged in double figures in scoring
his last three years on the varsity team; and
WHEREAS, In addition, John Winchester was the recipient of the presti-
gious George J. Hart Athletic Award at the 1954 commencement for the
senior male who has contributed the most to athletics during his high
school career; and
WHEREAS, Athletes like John Winchester provide a tremendous service to
the future of our State and Nation, inspiring generations of student-
athletes in their athletic journeys and ensuring their success in their
future years; and
WHEREAS, John Winchester has clearly had an enduring impact on the
youth of the Warwick Valley Central School District, as well as on the
community-at-large, and accordingly merits recognition and applause for
his impressive dedication to others; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor John Winchester upon the occasion of his induction into the
Warwick Valley Boys Basketball Hall of Fame Class of 2016 by the Warwick
Valley Central School District; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to John Winchester.
