LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commending the Irish Monument Committee and the
Irish American Society of Nassau, Suffolk and Queens upon the occasion
of hosting the 2016 Easter Monday Commemoration

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to pay tribute to
those organizations of true purpose and worthy accomplishment which
foster a spirit of community and service and, simultaneously, work dili-
gently to preserve their rich cultural heritage; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commend
the Irish Monument Committee and the Irish American Society of Nassau,
Suffolk and Queens upon the occasion of hosting the 2016 Easter Monday
Commemoration; and
WHEREAS, This year marks the 100th Anniversary of the Easter Rising of
1916; the Irish Monument Committee and the Irish American Society of
Nassau, Suffolk and Queens will be hosting this Remembrance on Monday,
March 28, 2016, at the Irish Monument in Mineola, New York; following
the singing of the National Anthems, the laying of wreaths, and select
speeches, a Luncheon will be held at The Irish American Center; and
WHEREAS, On Easter Monday, April 24, 1916, Irish patriots, supported
by exiled children in America, proclaimed Ireland's ancient right to
freedom; they rebelled in Dublin against the might of the British
Empire, and, despite the Rising being crushed and its leaders executed,
events began which won freedom for 26 of Ireland's 32 counties in an
Irish Republic; and
WHEREAS, It is most fitting that the 1916 Easter Rising be observed
due to the historic and vital part which Ireland's exiled children in
America played in the Rising; and
WHEREAS, The great State of New York is home to a large population of
Irish Americans who have made important contributions to the freedom,
liberty, culture, and economic well-being to both the State and the
Nation as a whole; and
WHEREAS, The reasoning behind designating the anniversary of the 1916
Easter Rising of the Irish Republic as Republic Day is that it would
serve as a day of remembrance, understanding and celebration of that
historic event, and of the selfless heroism and integrity of the women
and men involved in that strike for freedom; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body salutes all of the individuals, past
and present, who have given their time to these worthy organizations,
noting their commitment to enhance and improve the quality of life in
their community; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend the Irish Monument Committee and the Irish American Society of
Nassau, Suffolk and Queens upon the occasion of hosting the 2016 Easter
Monday Commemoration; and be it further
RESOLVED, That copies of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the Irish Monument Committee and the Irish American Society
of Nassau, Suffolk and Queens.
