LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Brother Yusuf Burgess posthumously upon
the occasion of his designation as recipient of the Living the Legacy
Award by the Whitney M. Young, Jr. Health Center
WHEREAS, It is incumbent upon the people of the State of New York to
recognize and acknowledge those within our midst who have made signif-
icant contributions to the quality of life therein; and
WHEREAS, From time to time this Legislative Body takes note of certain
extraordinary individuals it wishes to recognize for their valued
contributions to the success and progress of society and publicly
acknowledge their endeavors which have enhanced the basic humanity among
us all; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to honor Brother Yusuf
Burgess posthumously upon the occasion of his designation as recipient
of the Living the Legacy Award by the Whitney M. Young, Jr. Health
Center; this momentous occasion was celebrated at its Annual Legacy
Event on Thursday, October 29, 2015, at the New York State Museum, Alba-
ny, New York; and
WHEREAS, The Living the Legacy Award is given annually to a community
leader who has made a difference in the Capital District; and
WHEREAS, A steadfast advocate for youth development and environmental
education, Brother Yusuf Burgess was truly committed to improving the
lives of those around him; his extraordinary accomplishments truly
reflect his unwavering and ceaseless dedication to his community; and
WHEREAS, With the belief in leave no child inside, Brother Yusuf
Burgess was instrumental in the creation of better alternatives for
urban youth and helping them understand the importance of education and
conservation; and
WHEREAS, Brother Yusuf Burgess served as the Chairperson of the Envi-
ronmental Awareness Network for Diversity in Conservation, the Executive
Director of the Youth Ed-venture and Nature Network, Family Intervention
Specialist at Green Tech High Charter School, and Gang Prevention Coor-
dinator for the Boys & Girls Club of America; and
WHEREAS, Brother Yusuf Burgess was the recipient of countless awards
and accolades some of which include the Boys & Girls Club of Albany
Staff Appreciation Award, the Capital District Citizens Actions Progres-
sive Leadership Award, the Albany City Council Parent Teacher Associ-
ation Award, the Human Rights Recognition Award, the Hidden Heroes
Award, and the Children and Nature Recognition Award; and
WHEREAS, Rare indeed is the impressive dedication shown by an individ-
ual for the benefit of others which Brother Yusuf Burgess displayed
throughout his life; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when individ-
uals of such noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our atten-
tion, they should be celebrated and recognized by all the citizens of
this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Brother Yusuf Burgess posthumously upon the occasion of his desig-
nation as recipient of the Living the Legacy Award by the Whitney M.
Young, Jr. Health Center; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the family of Brother Yusuf Burgess.
