LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commemorating the 40th Anniversary of Fort Stan-
wix National Monument
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that the quality of
life of the citizens of the State of New York is greatly enriched by its
exceptional cultural, educational and recreational institutions; these
institutions give positive definition to the profile and disposition of
the communities of the State of New York and profoundly strengthen our
society with their commitment; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commem-
orate the 40th Anniversary of Fort Stanwix National Monument in conjunc-
tion with the National Park Service's 100th birthday; and
WHEREAS, Fort Stanwix National Monument is an archeological site and
battlefield which includes remnants of the original Fort Stanwix, a
historically significant fortress, famous for the strategic roles it
played during the French and Indian War and the American Revolution, as
well as for the various treaties negotiated within its walls; and
WHEREAS, Known as "the fort that never surrendered," Fort Stanwix,
successfully repelled a prolonged siege, in August 1777, by British,
German, Loyalist, Canadian, and Native American troops and warriors;
troops from Fort Stanwix also participated in the 1779 Clinton-Sullivan
Campaign and protected America's northwest frontier from British
attacks; and
WHEREAS, In 1976, a partial reconstruction of Fort Stanwix was
completed to memorialize its proud history and allow visitors to engage
with numerous representations of 18th century life and conditions; and
WHEREAS, In recognition of both its 40th anniversary and the National
Park Service's 100th birthday, the Fort Stanwix National Monument will
partner with New Orleans Jazz National Historical Park, Fort McHenry
National Monument and Shrine, and parks from across New York State to
put a National Park spin on this year's celebratory parade; and
WHEREAS, In addition, the Fort Stanwix National Monument will host the
telling of 40 stories about its distinguished history; there will also
be collaborations with the Rome Historical Society, a "Throwback Thurs-
day" movie night event, and a showcase featuring performances, crafts,
and a fashion show of international dress presented by refugee and immi-
grant artists representing several countries; and
WHEREAS, Furthermore, the Fort Stanwix National Monument will offer an
art exhibit in the Rome public schools, as well as a puzzle-based adven-
ture called Operation Sabotage Stanwix; and
WHEREAS, Under the illustrious guidance of Superintendent Frank
Barrows, the Fort Stanwix National Monument has experienced a dramatic
growth in attendance, and looks to further educate and enlighten citi-
zens of the Empire State by offering more exceptional programs and
events in the future; and
WHEREAS, The success of the Fort Stanwix National Monument is in
direct correlation to the efforts of its volunteers and staff, whose
involvement is, and always has been, characterized by an impressive
commitment, an unbridled enthusiasm, and an uncompromising standard of
excellence in all endeavors on behalf of this institution and the commu-
nity it serves; and
WHEREAS, It is the intent of this Legislative Body that when histor-
ical sites of such noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our
attention, they should be celebrated and recognized by all the citizens
of this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 40th Anniversary of Fort Stanwix National Monument; and
be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Frank Barrows, Superintendent, Fort Stanwix National Monu-
ment.
