LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring David S. Feller upon the occasion of his
designation as recipient of the Nassau BOCES Education Partner Award on
April 13, 2016
WHEREAS, It is incumbent upon the people of the State of New York to
recognize and acknowledge those within our midst who have made signif-
icant contributions to the quality of life therein; and
WHEREAS, From time to time this Legislative Body takes note of certain
extraordinary individuals it wishes to recognize for their valued
contributions to the success and progress of society and publicly
acknowledge their endeavors which have enhanced the basic humanity among
us all; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to honor David S.
Feller upon the occasion of his designation as recipient of the Nassau
BOCES Education Partner Award, to be celebrated on Wednesday, April 13,
2016, at Crest Hollow Country Club, Woodbury, New York; and
WHEREAS, A vital regional resource, Nassau BOCES offers state-of-the-
art programs for learners of all ages and abilities as well as cost
effective services for school districts and municipalities; and
WHEREAS, The 2016 Nassau BOCES Education Partner Award recipients were
chosen for this prestigious honor by a committee of distinguished educa-
tion and community leaders; they identified individuals and organiza-
tions who personified the spirit of educational partnerships and demon-
strated measurable impact on public education in Nassau County; and
WHEREAS, A Long Island educator for more than 30 years, David S.
Feller currently serves as Superintendent of the North Merrick School
District, the esteemed position from which he will retire on August 1,
2016; and
WHEREAS, Prior to taking the helm of the North Merrick School District
in 2001, David S. Feller served as special-education director of the
East Williston and Carle Place school districts; under his able leader-
ship, North Merrick has been identified as a New York State Reward
School District for modeling best practices for schools in need of
support; and
WHEREAS, During this time, David S. Feller was instrumental in initi-
ating a comprehensive co-teaching model in each school, and transformed
the district's theatre arts program into an inclusive arts experience in
which all students may participate; and
WHEREAS, In addition, David S. Feller established the Superintendent's
Challenge, for which students submit written essays and art work in
response to specific topics; he reviews every submission and provides
each student with personal feedback; and
WHEREAS, A passionate special education advocate, David S. Feller was
named 2010 Person of the Year by the Long Island Association of Special
Education Administrators; he is the founder and former chairman of the
Nassau County Superintendents Special Education Committee and is a cham-
pion for the continuation of the residential treatment program at Saga-
more Children's Psychiatric Center; and
WHEREAS, Rare indeed is the impressive dedication shown by an individ-
ual for the benefit of others which David S. Feller has displayed
throughout his life; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that those who
enhance the well-being and vitality of their community and have shown a
long and sustained commitment to excellence certainly have earned the
recognition and applause of all the citizens of this great Empire State;
now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor David S. Feller upon the occasion of his designation as recipient
of the Nassau BOCES Education Partner Award on April 13, 2016; and be it
further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to David S. Feller.
