LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commemorating the 45th Anniversary of the Queens
Interagency Council on Aging on March 17, 2016

WHEREAS, Senior citizens planted the seeds that made our communities
grow and prosper; their past contributions and future participation are
a vital part of, and valuable asset to, the fabric of community life;
and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize organ-
izations which faithfully serve the needs of the community and its citi-
zens with diligence and compassionate commitment to improving the quali-
ty and dignity of life for their loved ones; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commem-
orate the 45th Anniversary of the Queens Interagency Council on Aging to
be celebrated on March 17, 2016, in the Queens Community House, at Kew
Gardens Community Center, Kew Gardens, New York; and
WHEREAS, At this auspicious event, the Queens Interagency Council on
Aging will honor Council Member Julissa Ferreras-Copeland with the Rose
Kryzak Legislative Award for her outstanding leadership in championing
the cause of older adults and sustaining essential services for the
senior population; and
WHEREAS, In addition, community leader and senior advocate, Joyce
Lawrence, will be the recipient of the Leon Von Holden Advocacy Award,
which is bestowed upon her for her demonstrated commitment to the health
and well-being of the aging population; and
WHEREAS, Founded in 1971 by social workers and health care providers
in the Borough of Queens, New York, the Queens Interagency Council on
Aging is a non-profit, borough-wide membership organization which speaks
with one voice on behalf of seniors and agencies that serve them; and
WHEREAS, Through its member agencies, the Queens Interagency Council
on Aging strives to ensure that all older adults have access to essen-
tial services necessary to improve their health and well-being; and
WHEREAS, In so effectively carrying out its mission, the Queens Inter-
agency Council on Aging has demonstrated the value of education and
training, advocacy, and partnering with non-profit organizations and
businesses to provide a fertile meeting ground for facilitating network-
ing, social action, and cultural enrichment; and
WHEREAS, Throughout the years, as the only interagency council on
aging in the Borough of Queens, the Queens Interagency Council on Aging
has helped set the annual agenda for addressing aging-related issues in
New York City; and
WHEREAS, Under the luminous leadership of Executive Director Bruce
Cunningham, this vital organization has fulfilled its motto of speaking
with one voice involving and coordinating its efforts with the agency's
diverse membership which includes community organizations, service
providers, seniors, and other individuals; and
WHEREAS, Determined to achieve its goals, the Queens Interagency Coun-
cil on Aging has gained the support and recognition of both local and
State elected officials, as well as government agencies; and
WHEREAS, For 45 years, the Queens Interagency Council on Aging has
been dedicated to promoting the concerns of older citizens in the
Borough of Queens, New York; this facility has never lessened its
concern for the dignity of every resident it serves, or compromised its
standard of excellence for resident care; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 45th Anniversary of the Queens Interagency Council on
Aging; and be it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Bruce Cunningham, Executive Director, the Queens Interagency
Council on Aging.
