LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Dr. Merryl H. Tisch for her many years
of distinguished service to the New York State Board of Regents

WHEREAS, It is the practice of the State of New York to recognize those
skilled and dedicated individuals within our midst whose notable profes-
sional and personal accomplishments merit the recognition of their local
communities and this great Empire State; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor Dr.
Merryl H. Tisch for her many years of distinguished service to the New
York State Board of Regents; she will officially step down from this
esteemed position and leave the Board of Regents in March of 2016; and
WHEREAS, Born Merryl Hiat to Rabbi Philip Hiat, she received a bach-
elor of arts degree from Barnard College, and a master's degree from New
York University, as well as an education degree from Teachers College,
Columbia University; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Merryl H. Tisch taught first graders at the Ramaz School
in the Upper East Side of New York, New York, and at the B'nai Jeshurun
School from 1977 to 1984; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Merryl H. Tisch was appointed to the New York State Board
of Regents on April 1, 1996 and re-elected to five-year terms on April
1, 2001, April 1, 2006 and April 1, 2011; and
WHEREAS, She was elected Vice Chancellor by her colleagues effective
April 1, 2007, was elected Chancellor by her colleagues effective April
1, 2009 and re-elected to a three year term effective April 1, 2010; and
WHEREAS, As Chancellor, Dr. Merryl H. Tisch brought to her appointment
many years of experience in the fields of education, community service,
and philanthropy; and
WHEREAS, In addition to her work in education, Dr. Merryl H. Tisch has
served in various civic service positions, including at The Washington
Institute for Near East Policy, the UJA-Federation of New York, the
Leadership Enterprise for a Diverse America, the United States Holocaust
Memorial Museum, and the Citizens Budget Commission; and
WHEREAS, Furthermore, Dr. Merryl H. Tisch is the Chairperson of the
Metropolitan Council on Jewish Poverty, and is a member of both the
Board of Dalton on the Upper East Side and Barnard College; and
WHEREAS, With her throughout have been her husband, James S. Tisch,
and their three children, Jessica Sarah, Benjamin Jacob, and Samuel
Aaron, all of whom feel privileged to be a part of her life and rejoice
in her achievements; and
WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body that those who
enhance the quality of life in their community and have shown a long and
sustained commitment to the maintenance of high standards in their
profession, certainly have earned the recognition and applause of all
the citizens of this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Dr. Merryl H. Tisch for her many years of distinguished service to
the New York State Board of Regents, and to wish her well in all her
future endeavors; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Dr. Merryl H. Tisch.
