LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Alan Hertel upon the occasion of his
retirement after eight years of distinguished service to the United Way
of Broome County

WHEREAS, This Legislative Body seeks to acknowledge those individuals
whose professional lives and civic endeavors serve to enhance the stat-
ure of the State of New York; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor Alan
Hertel upon the occasion of his retirement after eight years of distin-
guished service to the United Way of Broome County to be celebrated at
its Open House held on Thursday, March 31, 2016; and
WHEREAS, For the past eight years, Alan Hertel has rendered faithful,
conscientious and valuable service to the United Way of Broome County
(UWBC) and the entire Southern Tier community; and
WHEREAS, Dedicated to helping others, Alan Hertel guided "The First
Call of Help" in becoming an official 2-1-1 call center across five
counties with 24/7 service year-round; he was also directly involved in
establishing 2-1-1's integral role as an essential intake service in the
Medicaid Reform Process; and
WHEREAS, As Executive Director, this esteemed man was heavily involved
in coordinating the response for donations after the shooting at the
American Civic Association in 2009, and managed the community response
to the 2011 flood after UWBC was officially designated as the lead agen-
cy for donations by Broome County; and
WHEREAS, During Alan Hertel's illustrious tenure, UWBC received state
grant funding and subsequently created a regional volunteer center
covering an eight county area; UWBC was also identified as the lead
organization for state funding directed at antipoverty programming; and
WHEREAS, In addition, Alan Hertel provided oversight for a comprehen-
sive strategic planning process within UWBC, and revised its by-laws to
comply with current Non-Profit Revitalization Act laws; he also spear-
headed efforts which led to a major grant from the Klee Foundation to
develop and operate the Healthy Lifestyles Coalition; and
WHEREAS, Moreover, Alan Hertel helped drive the process for a trans-
formation to Community Impact at UWBC, establishing a foundation which
will drive the organization forward; and
WHEREAS, Alan Hertel has been called upon to contribute his time and
talents to countless civic and charitable endeavors and has always given
of himself unstintingly; he served as a member of the United Way of New
York State Board from 2012 to 2015, and was named by Governor Patterson
to serve on the SUNY Upstate Medical University Advisory Council; and
WHEREAS, In his official acts, Alan Hertel was governed by a keen
sense of duty and always showed a unique grasp of human problems; he has
earned the admiration, esteem and affection of his colleagues; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that those who
enhance the quality of life in their community and have shown a long and
sustained commitment to the maintenance of high standards in their
profession, certainly have earned the recognition and applause of all
the citizens of this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Alan Hertel upon the occasion of his retirement after eight years
of distinguished service; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Alan Hertel.
