LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commending Guru Nanak's Kitchen, Long Island, New
York, upon the occasion of its designation for special recognition by
the Tri Community and Youth Agency
WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to recognize that the
quality and character of life in the communities across New York State
are reflective of the concerned and dedicated efforts of those organiza-
tions and individuals who would devote themselves to the welfare of the
community and its citizenry; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commend
Guru Nanak's Kitchen, Long Island, New York, upon the occasion of its
designation for special recognition by the Tri Community and Youth Agen-
cy to be celebrated at its Hall of Honor Cocktail Party and Dinner held
on Thursday, March 31, 2016, at the Woodbury Country Club, Woodbury, New
York; and
WHEREAS, The Tri Community and Youth Agency is a private, not-for-pro-
fit community based agency dedicated to supporting the growth and devel-
opment of youth and their families in the communities of Huntington,
South Huntington and Cold Spring Harbor; and
WHEREAS, For over 30 years, the Tri Community and Youth Agency has
provided a wide variety of educational, recreational, social, cultural,
athletic, counseling and advocacy programs, and worked closely with
businesses, school districts, law enforcement, community groups, govern-
ment agencies and other local organizations; and
WHEREAS, Guru Nanak's Kitchen, also referred to as free kitchen, is a
volunteer organization designed to serve food and other necessities to
all people equally, regardless of religion, caste, color, creed, age,
gender or social status; and
WHEREAS, A popular form of community outreach among Sikh groups world-
wide, Guru Nanak's Kitchen is believed to have been originated in the
1400s by the first Sikh Guru, Guru Nanak, who started this mission to
help the poor and needy; and
WHEREAS, Established in 2014, Guru Nanak's Kitchen of Long Island was
founded by like-minded members of the local Sikh community who have
dedicated their time and service to this worthy cause; and
WHEREAS, Today, this esteemed non-profit organization is comprised of
over 100 volunteers who prepare and deliver fresh food weekly to various
shelters across Long Island; the organization also organizes collection
drives for toys, gifts, clothes and more during the holiday season as it
seeks to grow and expand its mission; and
WHEREAS, Each Tuesday, Guru Nanak's Kitchen delivers homemade, heal-
thy, vegetarian food to the Tri Community and Youth Agency; its members
have also distributed new clothing, shoes, and school supplies to the
young people and their families who are in the Agency's care; and
WHEREAS, Moreover, Guru Nanak's Kitchen hosted a spring celebration
last year for the benefit of the Tri Community and Youth Agency,
complete with a DJ and cultural dance; and
WHEREAS, Rare indeed is the impressive dedication shown by an organ-
ization for the benefit of others which Guru Nanak's Kitchen has
displayed throughout its existence; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when individ-
uals and organizations of such noble aims and accomplishments are
brought to our attention, they should be celebrated and recognized by
all the citizens of this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend Guru Nanak's Kitchen, Long Island, New York, upon the occasion
of its designation for special recognition by the Tri Community and
Youth Agency; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Guru Nanak's Kitchen, Long Island, New York.
