LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commending Donald Mallozzi upon the occasion of
his designation as recipient of the Joseph Saia Lifetime Achievement
Award by the American Legion Kings County Youth Recreational Facilities,
Inc. on April 10, 2016

WHEREAS, Individuals who give of their time and energies and serve the
best interests of their communities are an asset beyond remuneration and
cannot be sufficiently extolled; and
WHEREAS, Donald Mallozzi has given not only of his time and energies
but also of his competence, intelligence and leadership and consequently
has been designated for special honor; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to commend Donald
Mallozzi upon the occasion of his designation as recipient of the Joseph
Saia Lifetime Achievement Award by American Legion Kings County Youth
Recreational Facilities, Inc. to be celebrated at its 22nd Annual Base-
ball Fundraiser on Sunday, April 10, 2016, at Gargiulo's Restaurant,
Brooklyn, New York; and
WHEREAS, American Legion Kings County Youth Recreational Facilities,
Inc. provides and maintains baseball fields for use by neighborhood
youth organizations and schools in Brooklyn, New York, allowing thou-
sands of children to play baseball in a clean and safe environment at no
cost to them or their families; and
WHEREAS, Born and raised in Bay Ridge, New York, Donald Mallozzi has
lived in Staten Island for over 43 years; and
WHEREAS, On August 8, 1966, Donald Mallozzi was drafted into the
United States Army and was sent to Fort Jackson for Advanced Infantry
training; in January of 1967, at the age of 20, he arrived in Cuchi,
South Vietnam, and proudly served his country as a mortar man in the
Army's 25th Infantry Division; and
WHEREAS, As a member of the 716th MP Battalion, Donald Mallozzi was
one of 50 men sent to Ton Son Nhut, to perform vital and dangerous secu-
rity work in the southern part of South Vietnam which was vital to our
air defense and war efforts at the time, and significant in the 1972
Spring Offensive which captured the attention of our Nation; and
WHEREAS, After his honorable discharge in August of 1968, Donald
Mallozzi joined the New York City Police Department (NYPD) on January
17, 1969, assigned to the 61st Precinct; three years later, he was
transferred to the MTS Precinct in Times Square, which was considered to
be very dangerous at that time; and
WHEREAS, Donald Mallozzi quickly rose through the ranks to Detective,
and then to the Tiger Unit, a Safe, Loft & Truck Squad (SLATS) of elite
and highly-specialized detectives; at this time, it was the oldest
detective unit in the NYPD, and operated out of a one room office on the
11th floor of the police headquarters; and
WHEREAS, Members of this elite team were highly trained and highly
specialized professionals with a focus that crossed borough, State, and
International boundaries to solve cases including hijackings, kidnap-
pings, grand larcenies, surveillances, and physical security of prem-
ises; and
WHEREAS, After Donald Mallozzi's formal retirement from the NYPD in
1982, he worked as a private investigator, bodyguard and security direc-
tor for 10 years; he then moved on to the IRS, where he retired as
Territory Manager after 15 years of dedicated service; and
WHEREAS, Donald Mallozzi has been called upon to contribute his time
and talents to countless civic and charitable endeavors and has always
given of himself unstintingly; and

WHEREAS, Dedicated to the community in which he lives, Donald Mallozzi
is a member of numerous organizations including the American Legion,
Vietnam Veterans, and Knights of Columbus; in addition, he has helped
raise funds for the Special Olympics, Wounded Warriors, and the Group
Home for the Mentally Challenged; and
WHEREAS, For over 20 years, Donald Mallozzi has been an enthusiastic
member of the West End Kiwanis Club; he has held several leadership
positions such as President, and Lieutenant Governor for the Brooklyn
Division; today, he serves as Treasurer; and
WHEREAS, A true philanthropist, Donald Mallozzi spends a great deal of
time helping the homeless by providing them with food and clothing; he
also delivers holiday turkeys and toys to the needy, coordinates
fundraisers at the Ronald McDonald House, and arranges holiday parties
for the children of the troops and veterans at Fort Hamilton; and
WHEREAS, Moreover, this remarkable man assists with the Police Widows'
Fund; since 1995, he has been instrumental in organizing a golf outing
which supports Kamp Kiwanis and Boys Scout Camp; through the organiza-
tion's efforts, over 100 disabled and disadvantaged children have
attended summer camp; and
WHEREAS, Throughout the entire period of his community service, a
period of constructive involvement, Donald Mallozzi has stood constant
in dignity, good grace and humor; and
WHEREAS, With him throughout have been his wife, the former Helen
Cangemi, his two children, and two grandchildren, all of whom feel priv-
ileged to be a part of his life and rejoice in his achievements; and
WHEREAS, Rare indeed is the impressive dedication shown by an individ-
ual for the benefit of others which Donald Mallozzi has displayed
throughout his life; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend Donald Mallozzi upon the occasion of his designation as recipi-
ent of the Joseph Saia Lifetime Achievement Award; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Donald Mallozzi.
