LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION congratulating Doris Walker upon the occasion of
celebrating her 107th Birthday

WHEREAS, Senior citizens bring a wealth of experience and knowledge to
the increasingly active roles they play in today's society; their past
contributions and future participation are a vital part of, and valuable
asset to, the fabric of community life and activity; and
WHEREAS, A resident at Bethel Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in
Croton-on-Hudson, New York, Doris Walker will celebrate her 107th birth-
day at a party held in her honor on March 23, 2016; and
WHEREAS, Born in 1909, Doris Walker lived in several homes in Ossin-
ing, New York; growing up, she and her brother would hitch the family
goat to their go-cart and have it pull them around; she also remembers
admiring the penny candies behind the glass cases at her father's
grocery store; and
WHEREAS, Doris Walker attended the old Lincoln School and was a member
of the last graduating class at Washington High School before the new
Ossining High School opened; and
WHEREAS, A faithful member of St. Paul's "On the Hill" Episcopal
Church, Doris Walker attended services every Sunday for most of her
life; on November 18, 1933, she married her husband, George, who passed
away in 1970; and
WHEREAS, In those earlier years, Doris Walker worked as a secretary in
New York City and later as a Stencil Worker at READER'S DIGEST in Chap-
paqua, New York, for 25 years; and
WHEREAS, This exceptional centenarian, with her zest for life, has
inspired and enhanced the lives of her family and friends; and
WHEREAS, Together, the couple happily raised two daughters, Joan and
Carole; today, Doris Walker is blessed to have five grandchildren, 11
great grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren in her life; and
WHEREAS, Doris Walker has always enjoyed knitting and crocheting and
was a skilled seamstress, making clothing for her daughters and to sell
at church fairs; and
WHEREAS, For over 75 years, Doris Walker lived in her family home; at
the age of 103, she moved in with her daughters, spending time in each
one's home, until this past January, when she moved to Bethel Nursing
and Rehabilitation Center in Croton-on-Hudson; and
WHEREAS, This distinguished woman has experienced the incredible joys
and sorrows characteristic of and reserved for those with the stamina
and courage to savor a full life; and
WHEREAS, This beloved woman has enriched the lives of those around her
through her joyous and sincere love for others and through the quiescent
charm and wisdom which comes only from a fullness of years; and
WHEREAS, It is the intent of this Legislative Body to publicly recog-
nize those who have reached such a remarkable age and who have witnessed
and celebrated the innovations, cultural developments and awesome
achievements of this country during the last century, while themselves
contributing to the growth and excellence of this great Empire State;
now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
congratulate Doris Walker upon the occasion of celebrating her 107th
Birthday; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Doris Walker.
