LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commending Jeffrey Kahn, MD, PhD upon the occa-
sion of his designation for special recognition by SUNY Downstate
Medical Center on April 9, 2016

WHEREAS, It is incumbent upon the people of the State of New York to
commend and recognize those esteemed individuals and institutions within
the medical community for their extraordinary and sustained contrib-
utions to the progress of medicine and the improvement of life; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commend
Jeffrey Kahn, MD, PhD upon the occasion of his designation for special
recognition by SUNY Downstate Medical Center at its Celebrate Downstate
2016 event on Saturday, April 9, 2016, at The Plaza Hotel, New York, New
York; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Jeffrey Kahn is being honored for his outstanding
achievements and commitment to humanitarian service which have advanced
medicine and transformed lives locally, nationally, and internationally;
and
WHEREAS, For over 130 years, SUNY Downstate Medical Center in Brook-
lyn, New York, has strived to provide outstanding education of physi-
cians, scientists, nurses and other healthcare professionals; advanced
knowledge through cutting edge research and translated it into practice;
cared for and improved the lives of its globally diverse communities;
and fostered an environment which embraces cultural diversity; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Jeffrey S. Kahn earned his Bachelor's degree in Microbi-
ology and Immunology from McGill University; he furthered his education
by obtaining his Doctor of Medicine and a PhD in Microbiology and Immu-
nology from the State University of New York Health Science Center at
Brooklyn; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Jeffrey S. Kahn completed his internship, residency and
chief residency in Pediatrics at Yale University and the Children's
Hospital at Yale-New Haven Hospital; he stayed at Yale University to
complete training in Pediatric Infectious Diseases and then joined the
faculty at Yale University in the Department of Pediatrics in the Divi-
sion of Infectious Diseases; and
WHEREAS, Today, Dr. Jeffrey S. Kahn holds the esteemed position of
Director of the Pediatric Infectious Disease and the Pediatric Infec-
tious Diseases Fellowship Program at UT Southwestern Medical Center as
well as the Director of Infectious Diseases at Children's Medical
Center; in addition, this remarkable man serves as the Medical Director
of Research at Children's Medical Center; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Jeffrey S. Kahn's groundbreaking research efforts have
been focused on human respiratory viruses, including respiratory syncy-
tial virus (RSV) and new emerging human viruses; his laboratory was the
first or among the first laboratories in the United States to describe
the epidemiology and clinical manifestations of several newly identified
viruses including human metapneumovirus, coronaviruses NL63 and HKU1,
human bocavirus and polyomavirus WUV; and
WHEREAS, As a leader in his profession, Dr. Jeffrey Kahn has proven
himself to be a great asset to medicine and to the health and welfare of
the citizens of the State of New York; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend Jeffrey Kahn, MD, PhD upon the occasion of his designation for
special recognition by SUNY Downstate Medical Center on April 9, 2016;
and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Jeffrey Kahn, MD, PhD.
