LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Peter J. Scheibner upon the occasion of
his retirement after 27 years of distinguished service to the Rockland
County Archives
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body seeks to acknowledge those individuals
whose professional lives and civic endeavors serve to enhance the stat-
ure of the State of New York; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor
Peter J. Scheibner upon the occasion of his retirement after 27 years of
distinguished service to the Rockland County Archives to be celebrated
at a party held in his honor on Thursday, April 7, 2016; and
WHEREAS, For over 27 years, Peter J. Scheibner rendered faithful,
conscientious and valuable service to the citizens of his community as
the Rockland County Archivist; and
WHEREAS, During his illustrious tenure, Peter J. Scheibner developed
and oversaw the state-of-the-art Rockland County Archives Building, and
set up a comprehensive records inventory and disposal authorization
process; and
WHEREAS, In addition, this esteemed public servant created an inactive
records program which covers over 50,000 cubic feet of records, and
personally secured significant grant funding for the County of Rockland;
and
WHEREAS, The recipient of numerous awards for his outstanding service,
Peter J. Scheibner was presented with the 2008 Rockland County Executive
Historic Preservation Merit Award, the 2014 William H. Kelly Annual
Archives Award for Excellence in Local Government Archival Program
Development, and the 2005 New York Association of Local Government
Records Officers Wheeler B. Melius Award in recognition of his outstand-
ing service to Records Management in New York State; and
WHEREAS, A charter member of the New York Association of Local Govern-
ment Records Officers, Peter J. Scheibner is a vital part of numerous
civic and professional organizations, including the Academy of Certified
Archivists, National Association of Government Archives and Records,
Society of American Archivists, Association of Records Management Admin-
istrators, and the Mid-Atlantic Regional Archives Conference; he is also
a board member of the local chapter of ARMA; and
WHEREAS, In addition, Peter J. Scheibner has worked with many
researchers and given technical guidance to multiple local cultural and
historical groups as a member of the Rockland County Historical Society
and the Lower Hudson Conference; and
WHEREAS, Moreover, Peter J. Scheibner has traveled all over the world
as a delegate to the International Archives Congress, and has attended
municipal archives steering committee meetings and symposiums in such
places as Amsterdam, the Netherlands, England, Switzerland, China,
Belgium and Spain; and
WHEREAS, In his official acts, Peter J. Scheibner was governed by a
keen sense of duty and always showed a unique grasp of human problems;
he has earned the admiration, esteem and affection of his colleagues and
the entire Rockland County community; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that those who
enhance the quality of life in their community and have shown a long and
sustained commitment to the maintenance of high standards in their
profession, certainly have earned the recognition and applause of all
the citizens of this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Peter J. Scheibner upon the occasion of his retirement after 27
years of distinguished service to the Rockland County Archives; and be
it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Peter J. Scheibner.
