LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commending Dr. Barry Tharp upon the occasion of
his designation as a 2016 Inductee into the Auburn Alumni Hall of
Distinction, on May 6, 2016

WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to take note of and
publicly acknowledge individuals who have distinguished themselves
through their exemplary careers, accomplishments, and purposeful lives
of service to their community; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commend
Dr. Barry Tharp upon the occasion of his designation as a 2016 Inductee
into the Auburn Alumni Hall of Distinction, to be celebrated at an
Induction Ceremony on Friday, May 6, 2016, at the Hilton Garden Inn,
Auburn, New York; and
WHEREAS, The Auburn Alumni Hall of Distinction was established in
2012, by the Auburn Education Foundation to recognize, honor and cele-
brate graduates who have distinguished themselves through outstanding
academic, professional, or civic achievements and to inspire current
students to pursue a path towards personal success; and
WHEREAS, A man of singular merit, Dr. Barry Tharp, Auburn High Class
of 1954, has continually demonstrated tremendous competence, extraor-
dinary intelligence and diligent leadership in his unwavering service to
both his community and his profession and consequently has been selected
for this most prestigious honor; and
WHEREAS, A graduate of East High School in 1954, Barry Tharp always
loved animals; as a young man, he had a mini-zoo in his garage on North
Hunter Avenue in Auburn, New York; and
WHEREAS, After graduating, Barry Tharp attended Cornell Veterinary
School; while there, he developed an interest in neurology and trans-
ferred to Cornell Medical School in New York City; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Barry Tharp successfully completed his neurology residen-
cy at Duke University Medical Center and a post-doctoral Fellowship in
Epilepsy and Electroencephalography at Stanford Medical Center; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Barry Tharp pursued his academic medical career as a
Pediatric Neurologist at Stanford University School of Medicine from
1967-1990, and then Baylor College of Medicine and Texas Children's
Hospital, Houston, Texas from 1990-2000; and
WHEREAS, In this capacity, Dr. Barry Tharp was primarily engaged in
clinical medicine caring for infants and children with neurological
disorders; his research was scientific and concentrated on the neurolog-
ical disorders afflicting newborn infants including epilepsy and autism;
and
WHEREAS, While at Baylor College of Medicine, Dr. Barry Tharp held the
position of Director of The Blue Bird Clinic which provided care to
children from all over the United States and many foreign countries
regardless of the parent's ability to pay; and
WHEREAS, Well-respected in the academic medical field, Dr. Barry Tharp
traveled to many foreign countries to deliver lectures and attend
conferences; in addition, he spent sabbaticals in both Paris, France and
Sydney, Australia; and
WHEREAS, In addition, Dr. Barry Tharp served as President of the Amer-
ican Epilepsy Society and the American Society of Clinical Neurophysiol-
ogy as well as Secretary of the International Federation of Clinical
Neurophysiology; and
WHEREAS, In 2008, Dr. Barry Tharp stopped practicing medicine, howev-
er, he continued to teach at the medical school and at the University of

California, College of Veterinary Medicine and was involved in clinical
research projects; and
WHEREAS, Today, Dr. Barry Tharp holds a faculty position in Neurology
and Pediatrics at the University of California, Davis Medical Center in
Sacramento; and
WHEREAS, When he is not working, Dr. Barry Tharp enjoys spending time
with his family and reading a good book; and
WHEREAS, With him throughout have been his wife, the former Nancy
Stone, and his four children, and grandchildren, all of whom feel privi-
leged to be a part of his life and rejoice in his achievements; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when individ-
uals of such noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our atten-
tion, they should be celebrated and recognized by all the citizens of
the great State of New York; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend Dr. Barry Tharp upon the occasion of his designation as a 2016
Inductee into the Auburn Alumni Hall of Distinction, on May 6, 2016; and
be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Dr. Barry Tharp.
