LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Hugo J. Leone posthumously upon the
occasion of his designation as recipient of a Liberty Medal, the highest
honor bestowed upon an individual by the New York State Senate
WHEREAS, Members of the Armed Services from the State of New York, who
have served so valiantly and honorably in wars in which this country's
freedom was at stake, as well as in the preservation of peace in peace-
time, deserve a special salute; and
WHEREAS, It is the intent of this Legislative Body to commend those
who have served in times of active conflict, as well as those who have
served in times of peace; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to honor Hugo J. Leone
posthumously upon the occasion of his designation as recipient of a
Liberty Medal, the highest honor bestowed upon an individual by the New
York State Senate, to be celebrated on Tuesday, April 19, 2016, at Sara-
toga County's Honor-A-Deceased Veteran Ceremony; and
WHEREAS, The New York State Senate Liberty Medal was established by
resolution and is awarded to individuals who have merited special
commendation for exceptional, heroic, or humanitarian acts on behalf of
their fellow New Yorkers; and
WHEREAS, Born February 1, 1930, Hugo J. Leone served his country as a
member of the United States Navy during the Korean War from 1948 through
1951; he was deployed as an Aircraft Engine Mechanic aboard the Aircraft
Carrier, USS Princeton Korean Theater; and
WHEREAS, For his exceptional service, Hugo J. Leone earned the Korean
Service Medal, with Service Star, and the Navy Occupation Service Medal,
with Asia Clasp; and
WHEREAS, After his discharge, Hugo J. Leone worked for the Hudson Pulp
and Paper Corporation in Corinth, New York, and as a part-time Patrol
Officer for the Hudson Falls Police Department; and
WHEREAS, Active in his community, Hugo J. Leone was a member of the
Schuyler Volunteer Fire Company Inc. for 40 years, and a communicant of
Notre Dame Visitation Church in Schuylerville, New York; and
WHEREAS, In addition, Hugo J. Leone served on the Town of Northumber-
land Zoning Board from 1994 through 2015, and contributed to his commu-
nity as a Northumberland Election Inspector from 1995 through 2015; and
WHEREAS, Hugo J. Leone died on Tuesday, June 30, 2015, at the age of
85; and
WHEREAS, Hugo J. Leone is survived by his beloved wife, Dorothy, of 62
years; his two sons, Michael and Peter; his daughter, Emilia; and four
grandchildren, Steve, Tess, Sarah and Zachary; and
WHEREAS, Individuals such as Hugo J. Leone devoted to improving the
quality of life for others, enabling them to build lives of dignity and
self-worth are deserving of the highest praise and recognition; now,
therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Hugo J. Leone posthumously upon the occasion of his designation as
recipient of a Liberty Medal, the highest honor bestowed upon an indi-
vidual by the New York State Senate; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to the family of Hugo J. Leone.
