LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Joseph T. Smith upon the occasion of his
retirement after more than 37 years of distinguished service to the New
York State Department of Corrections on May 4, 2016

WHEREAS, This Legislative Body seeks to acknowledge those individuals
whose professional lives and civic endeavors serve to enhance the stat-
ure of the State of New York; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize and
honor those distinguished officers and citizens who would devote them-
selves to public service, demonstrating great courage and diligence in
providing for the care and welfare of the citizens of their communities
and this great Empire State; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor
Joseph T. Smith upon the occasion of his retirement after more than 33
years of distinguished service to the New York State Department of
Corrections; and
WHEREAS, This momentous milestone will be celebrated at a party held
in his honor on May 4, 2016, at Novella's in New Paltz, New York; and
WHEREAS, A graduate of the State University of New York at Utica,
Joseph T. Smith began his long and distinguished public service career
as a Probation Officer; and
WHEREAS, Joseph T. Smith then served as a member of the New York State
Department of Corrections for the next 33 years, 14 of which were spent
at the Shawangunk Correctional Facility in Wallkill, New York; he quick-
ly rose through the ranks before attaining the esteemed title of Super-
vising Superintendent, the position from which he will officially retire
on April 27, 2016; and
WHEREAS, In addition, Joseph T. Smith was named the Director of the
Crisis Intervention Unit in 1996; and
WHEREAS, After his well-deserved retirement, Joseph T. Smith plans on
spending more time with his family, and looks forward to walking his
daughter down the aisle when she gets married in October; in addition,
he would like to explore both Italy and Ireland and fish in South Caro-
lina; and
WHEREAS, Dedicated to the community in which he lives, Joseph T. Smith
will continue to coach CYO Basketball and become more involved with the
Wallkill Hook, Ladder and Hose Company; and
WHEREAS, With him throughout have been his wife of 34 years, Elaine,
and their two children, Mallory and T. J., all of whom feel privileged
to be a part of his life and rejoice in his achievements; and
WHEREAS, For almost four decades, this extraordinary officer has
rendered faithful, conscientious and valuable service to the New York
State Department of Corrections; and
WHEREAS, In his capacity as Supervising Superintendent of the Shawan-
gunk Correctional Facility, Joseph T. Smith served with loyalty, honor
and distinction; he was governed by a keen sense of duty, and always
showed a unique grasp of human problems; and
WHEREAS, During his tenure with the New York State Department of
Corrections, Joseph T. Smith earned the admiration, esteem and affection
of his colleagues; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Joseph T. Smith upon the occasion of his retirement after more
than 37 years of distinguished service to the New York State Department
of Corrections, and to wish him well in all his future endeavors; and be
it further

RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Joseph T. Smith.
