LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commending His Eminence Timothy Cardinal Dolan
upon the occasion of his designation as Grand Marshal of the New York
City 2015 St. Patrick's Day Parade
WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to pay tribute to
individuals of true purpose and worthy accomplishment who work dili-
gently to preserve and celebrate their rich cultural heritage; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commend
His Eminence Timothy Cardinal Dolan upon the occasion of his designation
as Grand Marshal of the New York City 2015 St. Patrick's Day Parade; and
WHEREAS, In acknowledgment of this most prestigious appointment Timo-
thy Cardinal Dolan will have the honor of leading the 254th consecutive
New York City St. Patrick's Day Parade up Fifth Avenue on Tuesday, March
17, 2015; and
WHEREAS, The Grand Marshal and Aides Reception will be held to pay
tribute to Grand Marshal Timothy Cardinal Dolan and all of his Aides on
Sunday, February 22, 2015; his Aides are: Patrick M. Brady, New York
County; Martin Galvin, Bronx County; John J. Manning, Queens County;
John J. O'Farrell, Kings County; John J. MacDonald, Richmond County; Joe
G. McDonald, Nassau County; J. William Fahey, Suffolk County; Dan E.
Dennehy, Westchester County; Brendan J. McNamara, Rockland County; Kevin
P. Moore, Orange County; Catherine T. Hogan, United Irish Counties;
Thomas J. Doyle, Grand Council Emeralds; Desmond E. Crofton, Knights of
St. Patrick; and Orla Kelleher, Aide at Large; and
WHEREAS, New York City St. Patrick's Parade marched for the first time
in 1762, 14 years before the Declaration of Independence was signed in
Independence Hall, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; the Parade is regarded as
the most popular of all the Parades in New York City, and honors Saint
Patrick - the patron Saint of the Archdiocese of New York and Ireland;
and
WHEREAS, The New York Parade consists only of marchers and each year
hosts some 250,000 marchers and two million spectators; the Parade has
many outstanding marching bands, bagpipers in marching formations, high
school and college bands from throughout the United States and from all
over the world; and
WHEREAS, Timothy Cardinal Dolan was born on February 6, 1950, to Shir-
ley Radcliffe Dolan and the late Robert Dolan; he is the oldest of five
children and is very proud of his Irish heritage; and
WHEREAS, In 1964, Timothy Cardinal Dolan began his high school semi-
nary education at St. Louis Preparatory Seminary South in Shrewsbury,
Missouri; he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Philosophy at Cardinal
Glennon College; he then went on to earn a License in Sacred Theology at
the Pontifical University of St. Thomas; and
WHEREAS, On June 19, 1976, Timothy Cardinal Dolan was ordained to the
priesthood; he served as Associate Pastor at Immacolata Parish in Rich-
mond Heights, Missouri; and
WHEREAS, While studying for his Doctorate degree in American Church
History at the Catholic University of America, Father Timothy Cardinal
Dolan spent a year researching the late founder of the Catholic Biblical
Association, Archbishop Edwin O'Hara; and
WHEREAS, Father Timothy Cardinal Dolan returned to St. Louis and
served in parish ministry from 1983-1987; during this time, he was the
liaison for the late Archbishop John L. May in the restructuring of the
college and theology programs of the archdiocesan seminary system; and
WHEREAS, In 1987, Father Timothy Cardinal Dolan was appointed to a
five-year term as Secretary to the Apostolic Nunciature in Washington,
D.C.; five years later, he returned to St. Louis and was appointed Vice
Rector of Kenrick-Glennon Seminary; in this capacity, he held the posi-
tion of both Director of Spiritual Formation and Professor of Church
History, as well as an Adjunct Professor of Theology at Saint Louis
University; and
WHEREAS, In 1994, Father Timothy Cardinal Dolan was chosen Rector of
the Pontifical North American College in Rome; during his tenure in
Rome, he served as a visiting Professor of Church History at the Pontif-
ical Gregorian University and as a Faculty Member in the Department of
Ecumenical Theology at the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas;
and
WHEREAS, After 25 faithful years of priesthood, Father Timothy Cardi-
nal Dolan was named the Auxiliary Bishop of St. Louis by Pope John Paul
II; on June 25, 2002, he was appointed the 10th Archbishop of Milwaukee;
and
WHEREAS, His Eminence, Timothy Cardinal Dolan was named Archbishop of
New York by Pope Benedict XVI on February 23, 2009; he was installed to
the prominent office on April 15, 2009; two months later he received the
Pallium from His Holiness, Pope Benedict XVI, at St. Peter's Basilica;
and
WHEREAS, Archbishop Timothy Cardinal Dolan was a member of Catholic
Relief Services from 2009-2010; today, he is a member of the Board of
Trustees of The Catholic University of America as well as both a member
of the Pontifical Council for Promoting New Evangelization and Social
Communications; and
WHEREAS, In November of 2010, Archbishop Timothy Cardinal Dolan was
elected President of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops;
in January 2012, he was appointed to the College of Cardinals and in
February 2012, he was elevated in the Consistory; and
WHEREAS, A St. Patrick's Day Parade reflects and records the ongoing
history of the United States and Ireland, and provides an opportunity
for people of all generations to assemble in ethnic pride and pageantry;
and
WHEREAS, A fitting choice for Grand Marshal for the New York City St.
Patrick's Day Parade, Archbishop Timothy Cardinal Dolan embodies the
spirit and the cherished ideals and values of Irish-Americans of this
great State and Nation; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body that when individ-
uals of such noble aims and accomplishments are brought to our atten-
tion, they should be celebrated and recognized by all the citizens of

the great State of New York; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commend His Eminence Timothy Cardinal Dolan upon the occasion of his
designation as Grand Marshal of the New York City 2015 St. Patrick's Day
Parade; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to His Eminence Timothy Cardinal Dolan.
