LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION honoring Dr. Joseph Greensher upon the occasion
of his designation as recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award by
Winthrop University Hospital

WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize that the
quality of life in the communities across this great State of New York
is enriched by the diligence and compassionate commitment of those indi-
viduals whose singular purpose is the care and welfare of others; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to honor Dr.
Joseph Greensher upon the occasion of his designation as recipient of
the Lifetime Achievement Award by Winthrop-University Hospital; and
WHEREAS, Joseph Greensher, MD, FAAP, FAACT, is a highly respected and
much beloved pediatrician, who began his career at Winthrop-University
Hospital, then Nassau Hospital, in 1962; and
WHEREAS, Joseph Greensher completed his undergraduate education at the
University of California, Berkley, and received his Medical degree (MD)
from the University of Basel, Switzerland in 1958; and
WHEREAS, Upon receiving his MD, Dr. Joseph Greensher completed a
rotating internship at Queens Hospital Center, and an internship and
residency at Meadowbrook Hospital, now Nassau University Medical Center;
and
WHEREAS, As Vice Chairman of Winthrop's Department of Pediatrics, and
Senior Physician Advisor, Dr. Joseph Greensher has been committed to
serving children as their physician and advocate and has spent a life-
time sharing his passion for pediatric medicine by caring for gener-
ations of children and families who have come to Winthrop for care; and
WHEREAS, In addition to serving as long time Vice Chairman of the
Department of Pediatrics, Dr. Joseph Greensher served for more than two
decades as the Hospital's Medical Director; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Joseph Greensher has been a pioneer in child safety,
having worked with a major toy company in the 1980s to develop a new
type of plastic that would show up on x-rays in an effort to reduce
deaths and injuries among children who swallow or inhale small toy
parts; and
WHEREAS, As head of the New York State Task Force for Childhood Lead
Poisoning, Dr. Joseph Greensher lobbied for a law requiring mandatory
lead testing for children in 1993; and
WHEREAS, As Chairman of the American Academy of Pediatrics Study
Committee concerning all-terrain vehicles (ATVs), Dr. Joseph Greensher
successfully sought the creation of laws that restricted usage of ATVs
by children under the age of 16 and banned the further sale of three-
wheel ATVs; and
WHEREAS, As former president of the Nassau County Pediatric Society,
and having served as chairman of the local American Academy of Pedia-
trics Chapter 2 and alternate district chairman of District II, Dr.
Joseph Greensher has dedicated his career to improving the health and
welfare of infants, children, and young adults; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Joseph Greensher is an esteemed professor of pediatrics
at Stony Brook University School of Medicine and a prolific author,
whose contributions to the past and future of pediatric medicine can be
viewed in over 100 publications and chapters in more than 15 medical
texts; and
WHEREAS, A Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American
Academy of Clinical Toxicology and the Nassau Academy of Medicine, Dr.
Joseph Greensher is also a member of the New York State Medical Society,

Nassau County Medical Society and the American Association of Poison
Control Centers; and
WHEREAS, In the faithful performance of his duties and responsibil-
ities, Dr. Joseph Greensher's ongoing efforts and notable achievements
have significantly contributed to bettering the quality of life in his
community; and
WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body that those who
enhance the quality of life in their community and have shown a long and
sustained commitment to the maintenance of high standards in their
profession, certainly have earned the recognition and applause of all
the citizens of this great Empire State; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
honor Dr. Joseph Greensher upon the occasion of his designation as
recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award by Winthrop University
Hospital; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Dr. Joseph Greensher.
