LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commemorating the 250th Anniversary of Baird's
Tavern
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize and
commend those prominent businesses of the State of New York whose focus
and intent have made a substantial impact on the quality of life in
their community; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commem-
orate the 250th Anniversary of Baird's Tavern; this auspicious milestone
was celebrated with the Historical Society of the Town of Warwick's
Annual Tavern Night on Saturday, March 19, 2016; and
WHEREAS, From the time that George Washington marched up King's High-
way from Philadelphia to Newburgh, Warwick, New York has always been a
welcoming destination point for travelers in need of food, drink and a
warm bed for the night; and
WHEREAS, Founded in 1906, the Warwick Historical Society's mission has
been to preserve and celebrate the vibrant history of the Town of
Warwick and its people, and engage its communities through a variety of
programs aimed at developing an understanding and appreciation of its
unique historic heritage; and
WHEREAS, Located at 105 Main Street, Baird's Tavern is among the most
legendary buildings in Warwick's history; and
WHEREAS, In 1766, Francis Baird built his limestone tavern as an inn
to house travelers that, along with a store, served a vital role in
community life; and
WHEREAS, George Washington, then Commander-in-Chief of the Continental
Army, recorded his 1783 tavern visit in his diary; his wife, Martha,
also stayed at Baird's Tavern on her way to see Washington in his
Newburgh headquarters in 1786; and
WHEREAS, A true asset to society, the distinguished record of Baird's
Tavern merits the recognition and respectful tribute of this Legislative
Body; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the 250th Anniversary of Baird's Tavern; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Baird's Tavern, Warwick, New York.
