LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION congratulating four Brooklyn Technical High
School students upon the occasion of winning the Samsung Solve for
Tomorrow education contest
WHEREAS, Educational competitions which serve to better prepare our
students for their future participation are worthy of praise and
support; and
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to act, in accord
with its long-standing traditions, honoring the youth of today, and
leaders of tomorrow, whose character and achievements best exemplify the
ideals and values cherished by this great State and Nation; and
WHEREAS, This Legislative Body is justly proud to congratulate four
Brooklyn Technical High School students upon the occasion of winning the
Samsung Solve for Tomorrow education contest; and
WHEREAS, Tomorrow's economies will be forged by students who are
proficient in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) subjects;
Samsung is dedicated to helping people discover a world of possibil-
ities, and have made it their mission to raise student interest in STEM
subjects nationwide through innovative programs with our partners that
will help us all build a better tomorrow; and
WHEREAS, To excite students about the possibilities of STEM education,
Samsung started the Solve for Tomorrow education contest, giving schools
across the United States the opportunity to raise interest in Science,
Technology, Engineering and Math subjects among students by awarding
their schools with a share of technology products; and
WHEREAS, Alison Collard, Benjamin Spiegel, Hanin Dari and Riccardo
Monico, an extraordinary team of Brooklyn Technical High School students
who designed a smartwatch app to protect children from car accidents,
are among the five winners of this prestigious national contest to use
technology to solve real-world problems; and
WHEREAS, The functional prototype, which the students hope will be
polished further and used by consumers, detects an oncoming car based on
the sound waves emitted by its engine; the watch's alarm then warns its
wearer to get out of the way; and
WHEREAS, Poised eagerly with enthusiasm and determined purpose, these
scholars now stand honorably, with just pride in their accomplishments
and in eager anticipation of future challenges, understanding and appre-
ciating the caring counsel and support provided by their teachers,
coaches and parents; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
congratulate four Brooklyn Technical High School students upon the occa-
sion of winning the Samsung Solve for Tomorrow education contest; and be
it further
RESOLVED, That copies of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Alison Collard, Benjamin Spiegel, Hanin Dari and Riccardo
Monico.
