LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION commemorating the First Annual Noah Webster Week-
end in the Village of Goshen on May 6-7, 2016

WHEREAS, It is the intent of this Legislative Body to honor and commem-
orate the distinguished histories of the communities which comprise the
noble body of this great Empire State; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly proud to commem-
orate the First Annual Noah Webster Weekend in the Village of Goshen,
from Friday, May 6, 2016 through Saturday, May 7, 2016; and
WHEREAS, The First Annual Noah Webster Weekend is a time for celebrat-
ing and strengthening the sense of identity and pride in the contrib-
utions of Noah Webster who compiled America's first dictionary and
established the American educational system; and
WHEREAS, Noah Webster lived in the Village of Goshen in the 1780s, and
taught school from 1783 through 1784 in the Farmers' Hall Academy, a
two-story brick structure in the building which currently serves as the
Goshen Town Hall; and
WHEREAS, Village of Goshen resident, Sal LaBruna, formed a committee
to plan Noah Webster Weekend which will be a celebration of literature,
local history, and Noah Webster's life and achievements; and
WHEREAS, This auspicious event will kick off with a joint Literary Art
Walk co-hosted by the Goshen Art League; art and book lovers can travel
to downtown Goshen to meet local artists and authors, and purchase
signed copies of their books; in addition, visitors can view artwork and
photography displays, and attend poetry readings; and
WHEREAS, During the second day of the event, there will be a spelling
bee hosted by Literacy Orange; the spelling bee will take place in the
grandstands of the Historic Track in Goshen, the perfect setting for a
celebration of its heritage; and
WHEREAS, Noah Webster Weekend will also include various historic
lectures and speeches culminating with headline author Joshua Kendall,
author of THE FORGOTTEN FOUNDING FATHER: NOAH WEBSTER'S OBSESSION AND
THE CREATION OF AN AMERICAN CULTURE which is considered to be the best
available biography of Noah Webster; and
WHEREAS, The weekend will conclude with a Noah Webster themed play by
Cornerstone Theater Arts; and
WHEREAS, It is the intent of this Legislative Body to publicly recog-
nize and commemorate milestones in the history of communities, both
large and small, in this great Empire State; and
WHEREAS, In recognition of the Village of Goshen's rich history and
enduring contribution to the State of New York, this Legislative Body is
proud to pay tribute to this spirited town upon the occasion of its
First Annual Noah Webster Weekend; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
commemorate the First Annual Noah Webster Weekend in the Village of
Goshen, on May 6-7, 2016; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to Sal LaBruna.
