LEGISLATIVE RESOLUTION memorializing Governor Andrew M. Cuomo to
proclaim May 10, 2016, as Lipid Day in the State of New York
WHEREAS, It is the custom of this Legislative Body to recognize official
days that are set aside to increase awareness of serious illnesses that
affect the lives of citizens of New York State; and
WHEREAS, Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-
standing traditions, it is the sense of this Legislative Body to memori-
alize Governor Andrew M. Cuomo to proclaim May 10, 2016, as Lipid Day in
the State of New York, in conjunction with the observance of National
Lipid Day; and
WHEREAS, Each year, May 10th is designated as National Lipid Day to
bring awareness to dyslipidemia which is an abnormal amount of lipids
(cholesterol, triglycerides, or both) carried by lipoproteins in the
blood; and
WHEREAS, In developed countries, most dyslipidemias are hyperlipidemi-
as which is an elevation of lipids in the blood often due to diet and
lifestyle; and
WHEREAS, Dyslipidemia can also be caused by a prolonged elevation of
insulin levels, or increased levels of O-GlcNAc transferase (OGT); and
WHEREAS, Worldwide, dyslipidemia is the major cause of cardiovascular
disease; and
WHEREAS, Preventive measures for dyslipidemia include health educa-
tion, emphasis on the role of physical activity, diet, and timely visits
to a doctor; and
WHEREAS, Increasing community awareness and focusing public attention
on dyslipidemia and its devastating impact on patients' lives will
provide hope for a better future for those affected; and
WHEREAS, Lipid Day in the State of New York is dedicated to improving
the quality of life for individuals with dyslipidemia and their loved
ones by providing education and promoting programs of awareness, advoca-
cy, and research; and
WHEREAS, It is imperative that there be greater awareness of this
serious health condition, and more must be done to increase activity at
the local, State and National levels to support the patients as well as
their families; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this Legislative Body pause in its deliberations to
memorialize Governor Andrew M. Cuomo to proclaim May 10, 2016, as Lipid
Day in the State of New York; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be tran-
smitted to The Honorable Andrew M. Cuomo, Governor of the State of New
York.
